What are the new cables on poles for?

[link to this post]

My area has had FTTP for a couple of years, delivered via CBT (?) on the top of telephone poles. Over the last few weeks two large spools of cable have appeared attached to many of the telephone poles. What are these for? Are they just adding additional capacity or is it for something else?

Its most likely an alternative broadband provider with their own infrastructure coming to your street.
