Getting CSP moved - Power Circuit

[link to this post]

We have had FTTP for a couple of years now but potentially might need to move the CSP by about a metre. I am assuming this is an OR job - do I just raise this via my ISP ?

The reason I think we need to move it is that we are planning to install an Electric Car Charing Point and I have presumed that the FTTP cabling and the power circuit will need to be kept some distance apart (or does it not matter anymore with FTTP in the way it did with old copper lines ?)

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome

There is no interaction between the fibre and a car charging point, so no need to move the CSP unless it is physically in the way.

Where you may have a problem is the charging point interfering with the ONT, which would require a new run of fibre between CSP and ONT.

Thanks - the ONT will be on the other side of a cavity wall from the cabling, so at least 250mm horizontally and 300mm vertically. Would this be sufficient ?

A difficult one ... The signal from the ONT is Ethernet so of a decent amplitude, magnitudes greater than that used in FTTC and noise should not be so much of an issue, but only experience and time will say whether there is a problem.

Your car charger itself probably has an Ethernet connection or WiFi so the system will be designed to protect that. Your best option would be to ask the charger installer for their advice.

Hi Mike

do you know what "Electric Car Charing Point " it is ?.. The problem isn't the fibre side but any potential electromagnetic interference from the charging device and cat5e/6 cable.

We're talking about 32A @ 240V AC. At a distance of 30cm+ there should be no issue with interference. Proper Cat5e cables are formed out of four twisted pairs; the twisted pairs are specifically there to cancel out induced interference.

As long as you avoid flat network cables, you should be fine.

You could always try boiling a kettle right next to your ONT and see if it makes any difference smile

There's no issue at all. All my network hardware is in the cupboard under the stairs in close proximity to my incoming mains and associated consumer units for the house, solar, ASHP and EV charger,

The wiring regs specify (or at least used to specify) a minimum of 50mm separation between mains and signal wiring, but that was for safety. If the insulation rating is up to it, they can run in the same multicore cable, hence EV Ultra being available.

No issue, as noted. Carry on.
