Asus RT-BE92U and City Fibre - WARNING

[link to this post]

Anyone with a City Fibre connection and considering getting an Asus RT-BE92U router should be aware that the router won't connect at the speeds you are paying for.
Asked to explain why I was getting 11Mb download and 93MB upload with one of these routers, Asus support told me that the router does not support VLAN.
(And a VLAN is required to connect on City Fibre. The router does have a VLAN setting, though.)

Aquiss has a guide on how to configure some ASUS routers:
https://support.aquiss.net/en/knowledgebase/article/...

You might be able to install the third party Merlin firmware that adds many features to ASUS routers. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

There is a forum for Merlin firmware at SmallNetBuilder that can answer questions about your router and Merlin firmware before you install.
https://www.snbforums.com/forums/asus-wi-fi.37/

I’m using UK virgin media with an ASUS router, and the Virgin Hub in modem mode, and I am a big fan of Merlin’s firmware. Some nice tweaks and improvements over the ASUS standard version.

You can always go back as well.

or if you want to use merlin firmware

Merlin does support the be92u and you will have vlan there. I suspect asus stock firmware does too

That guide is for using VLAN on your internal network. Slightly different when the WAN connection to the ISP needs a VLAN tag.

Asus support said: The BE92U does not support VLAN, thus this can be the reason the network performance is low.
There is a VLAN setting (Advanced settings/LAN/IPTV/Manual Setting) which I used but it didn't work.

If the setting is under IPTV then you would have to think its only associated with that and not the main Lan connection for your day to day stuff. If Merlin firmware supports VLANs then it may be a good shout.

The VLAN setting for WAN has moved to the WAN section.
if the VLAN is wrong there would be no connection. No way the OP is getting 11Mb download when disconnected.
That said, the RT-BE92U has to be the worst choice for an Asus wifi 7 router. Nothing but problems.

That's where it is on the RT-BE88U (which works), but not on the RT-BE92U.
