Re-use existing fibre run to the cabinet for FTTC for FTTP?

[link to this post]

Openreach has been on our road this week and it looks like they've installed CBTs on our polls. They were also working around one of the street cabinets which is where I believe the fibre already runs to for our FTTC broadband.

I was wondering if they will simply use the same fibre run that already goes to the FTTC cabinet to supply the CBTs on the poll? Or, will they need to run a new fibre run from the central exchange? Just trying to get a handle on how much work might be left to do before I can order FTTP.

Very unlikely …. The feed fibre for the splitter will run back to the aggregation node.

Received a letter just the other day ..

When fibre was run to our poles there was also a lot of work done around the cabinet, not sure if it was entirely coincidental, or some sort of complication due to the fibre following the same route as the previous fibre and copper, whatever the two lots of fibre are independent of each other as I saw the newer fibre being laid all the way back to the exchange, and also some teething troubles with the FTTP didn't affect the FTTC.

No
They can't reroute the fibre from the cabinet to the CBT as the cabinet will need to be active until all consumers have been migrated to FTTP.
They are not going to run a feed from the cabinet to the CBT as it will introduce an extra joint and the cabinet will become redundant when all consumers have been migrated.

Everyone forgetting that subtended head ends that can use spare fibre do exist - though are rare.

Standard practice is use fibres that are at the aggregation node which will often be near a FTTC cabinet

Spine cables from the head-end exchange go to Fibre Aggregation Nodes underground. FTTP is fed from these, i.e. the splitters will be spliced onto spare fibres here.

It's quite common for a Fibre Aggregation Node to be close to an FTTC cabinet, but not always.

It's also quite common for the FTTP network to follow a completely different topology to the copper network. The copper network heads towards the local exchange; often the FTTP network heads towards a larger head-end exchange, and in some cases this is in completely the opposite direction.
