Openreach XGS-PON question

[link to this post]

I know it's only in trial at the moment, but a small question about Openreach and XGS-PON. Would an install of XGS-PON require a new feed cable through the ducting, or would can use the already existing cabling from a previous FTTP Openreach install?

Many thanks

Hi,

When Openreach move to XGS-PON, it will be carried over the same fibres as are currently used for GPON (and at the same time as GPON). (As will 25G PON, 50G PON, 100G PON, etc.).

The expensive bit is putting fibre in the ground (or the air), once that is in place then the concept is that any future technology will run over it.

Thank you. The biggest reason I'm asking if because OpenReach had trouble feeding the fibre cabling through originally. They found the blocked duct and managed to feed it through. I wouldn't want to order something like this, and have to go through that again.

The single-mode fibre in the ground will likely be able to keep up with what's considered a "fast" internet connection for the rest of your life (assuming it doesn't get physically damaged). There's a lot of money to be made if you're the vendor that can fit more data down the fibres that are already installed, and by the time you account for multiple wavelengths and improved modulation as computers get better the capacity is effectively unlimited.
