Probably the twin set too small new operating systems scale the twin so it does not limit single thread downloads

I'm guessing you mean RWIN, and the old faq here for Windows up to an including XP:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/tweaks

On XP some corporate VPN type tools mess around with the automatic settings and can slow stuff down.

Since Vista, MS revised the IP stack, so none of the tweaks are needed. Especially in 7 and now in 8 and 8.1, the home user and broadband is what they are designing for.

A quick test now that it's getting on for 23:30 and people heading to bed (the other 2 here still up, not doing much)

Same test conditions, wifi off etc.

TBB 60.42 / 12.66
Speedtest.net Manc 47.76 / 15.73

(waits a minute)

TBB test 2 60.73 / 12.82
Speedtest.net Manc 61.42 / 15.56

Pretty conclusive, IMO. I'm not complaining, again, I don't think the peak slowdown is horrifying or anything, but there's definitely a bit of something somewhere somehow!

I think it's the Manchester speedtest.net that is messed up, not PlusNet. London looks OK on your results and so does TBB. I like Maidstone. I hope you are aware that speedtest.net test sites are just something pretty well any Tom; Dick or Harry can set up, with absolutely no guarantee of output capacity. AIUI there are some with a mere 100Mbps!

You also need to use the BT Performance Test and follow through to the Further Diagnostics. Ignore the silly things that tells you to do, but obviously do the ones you already know such as making sure nothing else is using the connection.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 55.8/14.5Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

I have found XP doesn't seem to like the TBB speed tester.
Never had a problem with XP & speedtests.

Prob your TCP paras need tweaking; a well known issue in XP and fixed on Vista +.

Your exchange is a sub-tendered exchange to another one which has an amber warning on one of its SVLANs for capacity. They are usually resolved within a few days once they are reported as amber so lets see if that changes next week.

On our network side, last night you were connected to PCL-AG04 WBMC Faraday 1 which had buckets of capacity (looked a teeny bit under subscribed tbh) so I don't think it was congestion our side.

Do you have any other neighbours with Fibre who are seeing a similar issue?

Lets check how it is next week?

Thanks for the very detailed info - I didn't realise the exchange was linked to another, this nicely answers the main concern I had which was that ours couldn't handle the load even with 99% of the town still on ADSL smile And it does give me a lot of confidence that on your side things are very well looked-after.

I don't know anyone else with fibre here yet - we were literally the first FTTC connection on this exchange (according to the engineer who came.. we even beat all the other BT/Openreach engineers in town tongue) on Tuesday so it's very early days yet. Also despite what people in the forum say, all the BTW sites say there's a 10 day stabilisation period... this is day 3...

Of note this evening:

* I'm seeing a perfectly stable 52 down / 15 up, no fluctuations at all yet, but it's not the 59 that the BTW Checker estimates, nor the 62 we were seeing quite stable during quiet periods of the past couple of days

* I tried BT Wholesale's Performance Test too, and went into the diagnostics - it says we have an IP profile of 53.61, meaning it's dropped a bit as far as I'm aware.

Will keep watching. I'm not sure whether to expect it to go up and down in the first 10 days or not, there's a lot of conflicting info.

I'll say it again, there isn't!

Nothing special about the first 10 days, only the first two. If it's got past that it is likely to remain stable, although may reduce over time due to crosstalk.

Odd that BT think there is:

You'd think they'd know better, being the ones who install and maintain the system. It's as if they have all this expertise and knowledge of how their own network works, then a huge inexplicable gap where they make something up at random.

It does seem very stable currently, not seeing the fluctuations at all. 10Mb slower at max beats the evening average of 30 or so from the past couple of days, so overall it's not the worst of news.

Edit: Just done more tests, and though it's 50, it's still extremely consistent so the "rollercoaster evening" issue is definitely ironed out today at least.

Interestingly, for the TBBx1 test yesterday it was getting 10-11 (only the x6 test would get the full speed), now it's getting the full 50 on TBBx1 as well. I'm not sure why, but it sounds like good news.

You'd think they'd know better
But they don't.

It looks as though the technical description of how the BT Wholesale DLM works has been removed from the publicly accessible documentation. I'll have a hunt around some other time and see if I can retrieve a copy. For the moment, with regard to ADSLx, have a read of this page.

However, on FTTC it is the Openreach DLM that controls the line. The BT Wholesale one appears simply to forward ISP configuration requests, feed back information from the Openreach one, and calculate the IP Profile. The Openreach DLM is described on Page 14 here.
