0.2mbps speeds???

[link to this post]

Hey guys,

I've been noticing the need to keep rebuffering - listening to mp3 tracks from napster - for the past few days, and it does it every few minutes.

So I decided to check my connection, I got speeds of 0.2mbps up and 0.2 mbps down. Ok I'm on a 2mbps line here!

Could they be limiting it or something? I've noticed this for several days.

Was thinking of moving to sky as they have adsl max but I don't know yet. Should I ring Orange?

Cheers!

Is there something goin on we should know about?

Never argue with idiots, they just drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!

You are aware you are on a contended service?

Even with contention he shouldn't be getting 200Kbit/s speeds. A 50:1 contended 2Mbp/s service based on a BTw product should not preform under 400Kbit/s. Its rare to see 400Kbits on a 2Mbps/line though.

The OP should contact Orange.

Atlast, someone else with the same problem. My 2mbps connection ranges from 150kbps to 1900kbps. It started about 5 weeks ago, but previously I have never had issues and I have had broadband since it went live in my area years ago. I also live less than 75m from my exchange (WWYEOV yeovil, somerset).

Some days it is fine, others it is rubbish. I can only assume they are carrying out work, maybe LLU?

I have been in contact with Orange "help" first call was a waste of time someone who can not speak English reading propmts from a troubleshoooter. It got no better so i requested a MAC code. Last ditched effort ( I have been with this supplier since freeserve dial-up ) and they asked me to use this site for a speed test, the one I have been using anyway.

They said it was 'normal', they reckon they don't have information on local maintenence, and it's still up and down like a yoyo.

Unless the ISP has no Central bandwidth left. I can't see Orange running around buying up / leasing BT centrals when they really wanna save that cash to LLU a bunch more places, TBH.

Nikoliath -
If your broadband speeds were OK, but then get progressively worse of a period of a few weeks, it can be caused by capacity problems at your local exchange.

You can check if your exchange is Green (OK) or Red (***) at ...
http://status.zensupport.co.uk/exchanges/

And you will find that Yeovil is Red
(ignore the date of upgrade - it's very unreliable)

I'm with Pipex/Tiscali and I'm still on the Pipex network. I'm also in Yeovil and I'm about 620metres from the main exchange. Speed before November 2007 was around 6.5MBits down and 400Kbits up. Now I'm lucky if I get 2Mbits down and 388Kbits up.
Since Tiscali bought out Pipex's database, the speed has been atrocious. I called them (before they started charging for the phone calls......they broke my contract on that bit)and they said that BT were doing work on the exchange. Pipex also supply my phone line, so I can't ring them to ask about any work. Some kind of BT rule.
I'm the 8Mbits Max package+static ip. Costing 24.99p a month. I signed up to to them for the dsl connection before the phone line, so I have separate accounts. The phone costs are separate.
I'm going to write to them for the MAC code near the end of this month, so I can change to a cheaper and just as [censored] connection; probably supanet or some thing like that.
But I digress. Today I went to a clients house to sort out their computer and their ISP is Talk Talk. They also have a bad connection. So I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2008. This did speed up the connection, but still it is nowhere near the speed they should be getting.
So in conclusion, as far as the ISPs causing the problems, I would have to say that is not the whole problem. It is BT doing work on the exchange.
My question is this. How do I, a non BT phone user find out if any work is being done at the exchange?
