Can I get 8mb with old Speedtouch USB modem?

[link to this post]

Hi
I've been a long-time Freeserve/Wanadoo customer and recently upgraded to Orange's 19.99 "unlimited" 2mb service but was very reluctant to install Livebox as my old frog-shaped Speedtouch USB modem was working OK (line drops 3 or 4 times a day but I can live with that). But now I've asked for free upgrade to 5.5mbps and am worrying that my old modem won't cope. I've seen mention here of a high-speed driver for the 330 but don't see this mentioned under link for discontinued green frog USB. Should I try that 330 high-speed driver or take the plunge with Livebox? I've read lots of Livebox woes in forums so still worried about that, plus using USB modem means I can keep my two ethernet connections free for internal networking.
Thnaks for any advice!

i use speedtouch if have problems with a connection on livebox. i get the same speed on both which is about 2.5 Meg, but even on speedtouch it shows that line speed it 6..7Meg
there are two different drivers on thomson webstie, one of them are up to 8Meg.
livebox is usually easier to use - you don't have to open tepephone connection everytime you want to use andyou can use just normal ethernet cable and obviously share the connection between a few computers (inc. wireless)
it just depends what you need
take care

Personally I would ditch the frog(or at least keep it in a desk draw! Livebox is OK.

the old frog modems will struggle with anything over 4Mb, the high speed drivers are for the newer speedtouch 330's. it's a USB congestion issue, it should still in theory connect but you may get slow / intermittent connection. the livebox has 2 ethernet ports you will still have 2 free for internal networking (1 spare on the livebox, another on your PC). it won't hurt to try as with ethernet you don't need to install any software or uninstall the speedtouch. plus you get the free phone calls & wireless connection if you need it. the main problems with liveboxes tend to be talk issues or wireless connections, both of which aren't available on the speedtouch so it shouldn't be a problem as they don't seem to be a feature you particularly want or need if you're happy to continue with the speedtouch. i'm sure most people on here would agree that an ethernet modem/router is far more reliable than a USB modem, and will save you from having to log on every time you turn your computer on

OK, went for it when connection speed went up to 5.5mbit and Alcatel couldn't cope. Took an hour to get installed (kept saying "not all software could be installed blah... blah..."). Eventually it installed, though for no apparent reason. Since then, rock steady internet connection at 4mb, which is fine. Networking via cable for 2nd PC effortless. Set up wireless connection with laptop (worked on tenth attempt - some firewall issues plus forgot to miss out spaces inputting WEP key - duh...). Can't network laptop-to-PC via wireless but can do via cable. Talk phone worked easy no probs. So all in all, 3 hours of faffing but happy now. Many thanks all for suggestions and advice.
