Orange, Sky Streaming Sport and Non UK IP Address

[link to this post]

Hi

Has anyone else tried to use the Sky Sports streaming video service for the Champions League or other streaming Sky services connecting through Orange? It would appear that most (if not all) IP addresses being allocated to UK Orange Broadband customers are showing as connecting from outside the UK and being denied access due to copyright restrictions. Sky are aware of this but say it is not their problem. Check here to replicate this issue

http://play.www.skysports.servecast.net/skysports/verify.asp

My current IP address is showing as originating in Germany.

Is there any way round this annoying problem?

Maybe this is the first sign of the barefruit trial problems?

barefruit.com

Try a ping path of the thing your streaming.

That seems a very likely cause. Have AOL went down this road as well? Sky customer services immeadiately asked if I was an AOL or Orange customer when I telephoned to enquire why they were blocking my IP address.

Has anyone any tips on how to get connected to a `UK` IP address with Orange?

There may be a way around it. Earlier in the year I was watching some streaming sport from Holland, it was of course only available to those from Holland and when I tried to view it I got the "this is not available outside of Holland etc etc" message. But I was able to view it my setting my browser to go through a dutch proxy server, this allowed me to download the license to view it and fool the site into thinking I was from Holland. After that I set my browser back to it's normal settings (as it's not possible to stream sport through a proxy server as they're generally very very slow) and I was able to stream anything off the site and view older video clips as as far as the site was concerned I was from Holland and the license was downloaded.

I tried your link above and got the "Unfortunately, due to broadcast rights restrictions, this content is not available to viewers located in your region" message, I then tried it again with my browser set to go through a UK proxy and I didn't get that message, I got a winplayer although as that's Soccer Saturday there is no stream there anyway so I'm not 100% sure if it worked. Could you give me some links to streams that aren't working for you?

The problem is with Sky them selfs. If they're going to use a map of which IP addresses are in the UK, they'd better make sure their map is correct.. they haven't though.

Since Orange broadband users all have Energis LTD/Cable & Wireless IP addrs its pretty inexcusable.
