orange Slovakia get FTTH, why dont we!

I found this press release yesterday.

even slovakia get a FTTH network. Why cant UK operators get off their backsides and start investing!

Am sure i read somewhere that BT were looking at optical lines, but not sure what the outcome was.

Yes I have heard the same as well.

Aparantly Fiber is now cheaper than copper lines. But Currently Bt are effectively refusing to rooll out fiber nationwide, only in new developments.

Then they have to over lay the optics with copper to supply xDSL :P

We have a 100% phone coverage in the UK, the Eastern Bloc is much less well served so they need an expansion of telephone connections and as you say it makes sense these days to do it with fibre. So the basic answer to the question is "because we don't need it" as we are not at the same point in our telecoms network development.

Openreach envisage providing 80% of new developments via fibre without any copper in the future.
