BLAZING SPEED

[link to this post]

Am I the only one who has anything positive to say about orange, no doubt the customer services is poor and can be very frustrating at times but hey most things can be sorted by a quick google. my speed has alwys been fast never really dropped below 6.5 meg at any time of the day. Just got to be careful about the fair use policy though with DL speeds as fast as this. Has any one else got a decent DL speed. The trouble is though, the more you get the more you want.. only human i guess.

Best speeds appear to be in South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. I'm in the latter and speed is just over 6.

Hi,

I used to be on orange but moved to BE. I have to say the speed is awesome. I now get 12MB no probs. Excellent customer service which is free to call 24/7

Cheers

H

With Orange and getting about 5.6 to 6 fairly regularly - measured with Broadbandmax.co.uk - but not reliable, as the service is likely to be dropped without warning as for 4 days recently (see my comments under Connection Problems) with the resultant time-wasting with Orange customer services, and losses from missed emails, transactions etc.

The spam situation is now getting intolerable with about 150 mails a day being sifted into the junk email folder and 8 to 10 new items to be identified as junk daily, on top of checking that auto-junk items are really all junk.

Not Orange's fault! You've dropped your email addy at various leaky web sites.

I've been with Orange/Freeserve for years and hardly get any spam, by being careful where I reveal my addy.

Ask Orange to change your email addy.

Totally agree about the spam. I only use disposable addresses when I don't absolutely trust a website.

As for speed, I'm happy with my 5.5M, especially given the distance to the exchange. No major problems with connections so far (touch wood).

With reference to:

I'm not so sure... I think it's partly to do with the Orange email system where an address can be [email protected]. Rarely do I get full actual addresses which I've used to identify the source e.g. [email protected]. They appear to be random letters in front of the address, but strangely the remainder of the address has been picked up somehow or as you say from a 'leaky' recipient or mail server?.

Spammed Email Addys

No, they still have to got hold of the "myaddr" part, which is as unique as any other ISP's addys that does not use the Orange system of giving each user his own sub-domain.

OK. I've never seen random Recipient addys like this, altho' I have seen them in the Sender's addys.

I've used Freserve/Wanadoo/Orange email for years and, like you, whenever I register my email at a new Website, I use the "anything" in front of the @ to uniquely identify that Website. This way I can see where any spammer got hold of my addy, warn the website concerned that it is leaking, if necessary, and use the mail filtering rules to delete any mail addressed to that addy that doesn't originate from the corresponding website's domain.

I have only ever received spam which I can identify as definately originating from 2 websites :
- Fujitsu.com
- Emusic.com

Perhaps the more aware spammers realise that Freserve/Wanadoo/Orange addys contain anything in front of the @ and therefore randomise them when sending, so as not to reveal their sources.

Thanks for the reply.
Well I'm gradually changing all known instances of used Orange/ Wanadoo email addresses to a totally different (free) address, so at some time I will ignore all Wanadoo emails. This does mean editing my email on each site I get genuine mails from & advising family/friends etc..

It's another good reason to review who supplies my internet service; and a shame because I like to use POP3 and Outlook for my emails - not webmail - although I'm switching to an IMAP email system which offers advantages over POP3.

I had the same problem with my NTL address so I changed to google mail. I've used that address for about two years now and have no problem and it's POP 3 too.
Another tip for less SPAM - If you got to a site that wants an e-mail address from you and you don't want to give your's try a disposable address instead. There's loads around, I like 10 minute mail

by name by nature
