Hi
I only get 'noise' on the line once broadband is on. Once it's switched off, the line's fine. I've changed filters, used the test socket, but to no avail.
Question is, who's responsible ? - Orange or BT ? - and by changing to another ISP (namely 02), will it solve the problem ?

Hi,
I am certainly no expert but it does sound like a faulty or missing filter to me. Do you have filters on all of your phone sockets in use? (Including Sky/Alarms, etc).
I had this exact problem when I started out, and it was a faulty filter, replaced FOC by the ISP.
Regards,
White.

Nope; all filters are fine. I even used those provided by 02, and the problem's still there. I've only got one phone socket so there's only one filter used.
So is it a fault with the ISP rather than with BT ?

Call BT but don't mention the broadband, it is a problem with your socket however if you mention the BB BT will send you back to your ISP who will then get openreach to run a test on your line which will come back as no fault found because they will be looking for a fault on your BB not your telephone line.

Hi smiler
If BT do come out and have a look, presumably they're going to do a 'quiet line' test (which will come up as no fault).
If I plug in the broadband, and the engineer hears the noise, will he say 'talk to your ISP' ? - in which case I might be lumped with a rather large call-out charge ?

Hi Conrad,
In my experience, I've advised a number of customers to do the same, as long as you have done all you can from your side (swapped filters and no extention cables) it is a problem with your socket and you wont be charged or asked to talk to your ISP

Thanks again, smiler.
Well, I talked to my current ISP (02), and they said I need to wait a few days before they can take it further. I need to be over the 10 day stabilisation period before anything can be done. I think it would be best if they talked to BT rather than myself.
And 02 customer service seem to be quite better than Orange (bar one or two novices I've encountered).

Hi, just signed up to this forum, Very interested to learn about problems with Orange and noise on telephone line when router is plugged in. I have had this problem for months with associated drop off in broadband speeds ( I was acheiving up to 6.5Mbps as measured on Thinkbroadband but it fell off to under 1M. since August 2009)
After going through all the usual things, new filters, and a new Belkin N router (loads of money) problem persisted. BT checked line said it was ADSL side,Orange said it was BT, me piggy in the middle!!
Orange got a BT engineer down this week and fault was traced to poor connection on BT box outside my house - problem with noise fixed. The engineer said the BT test would not show the fault, I wonder what is the point of it then?
However............... after carrying out speed checks with Thinkbroadband and confirmed by some other testers my downstream speed seems to be stuck on 1.4Mbps and uptream about 0.4Mbps.
I am waiting on a call back from Orange who say they will investigate further.
The whole episode has been filled with confusion and mis information from both BT and Orange and I still have nothing like my contracted speed (8M) although I would be happy with 50% of this. The BT engineer confirmed that on my exchange and distance I should get 4Mbps at least. I will keep you posted if you are interested. I'm determined to solve this !!

Please, do keep us posted.
And since migrating to 02 (in the last week or so), the noise on the line has drastically reduced; I did mention this to 02 and they said they'll look into it.
Maybe they spoke to BT and the issue was resolved without arranging for an engineer to come out ? - who knows, but thankfully my speed has gone up to what it should be (about 15/16 meg).
The sad thing is, when I was with Orange, they didn't do anything about it, couldn't be bothered, or were just completely clueless.
I would urge you to leave them as soon as your contract runs out. Their service is fine once it's up and running, but when it goes, it really goes.
