Slow broadband speed

[link to this post]

Hello all. We have Orange broadband at home but at times it can be very slow... we don't use the internet a lot but if someone is using say iPlayer and someone else is surfing, then it seems like loading pages can make the iPlayer stall and vice versa. I imagine you get these posts a lot so I've tried to find as much information as I could first!

If no one else is using the internet then a speed test will give maybe 90kb/second download.

We logged on to the modem (I think the model number is Orange/Siemens SE572?) and found these statistics:

Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.1 (G.DMT)
Maximum line rate: 3936 kbps (downstream) / 448 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 10 dB (downstream) / 21 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 53 dB (downstream) / 31 dB (upstream)
Output power: 19 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)

I have been reading the forum as well to find some help and noticed some people talking about the Poplar exchange (we live on the Isle of Dogs)... if this is full could this cause our slow speed?

A lot of people mentioned wiring so we took these pictures... I don't know if they will help!

This is where the phone line comes in to the house... after this it goes in to the wall.

This is the phone socket where the modem is.

We noticed these wires near the front door... it looks like they have been cut and electrical taped over. (Not sure if they are phone wires though or what they are from.)

Thanks for any suggestions. x

Your router stats look reasonable for your line length, about 3.8 km. Shows you have a Sync Speed of nearly 4 Meg. However, they show (G.DMT) that your are running over BT's DSL Max and not LLU.

Could it be you are on one of Orange's old 4 Meg packages and never upgraded? You should ask Orange to upgrade you to LLU, which they have in your area or switch to a different LLU provider, see : http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LNPOP , tho' I've also notice posts about congestion at Poplar.

You'll never get much more than about a 4.3 Meg Sync Speed, but your actual download speeds of 90 Kbps are atrociously slow. This may be due to congestion on the BT non-LLU network. Do a BT speedtest here : http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ and post the full results.

Your phone sockets look old-style and might be improved; others will be more qualified to advise you. The last wiring looks a mess but I don't think it's phone.
