Using 1and1 SMTP on Orange

Have a friend whos home connection is with Orange. His works laptop is configured to use 1and1 email. He can send and receive email at work (ISP there is Entanet) and from other places, like hotels etc but at home on Orange he can only receive. Funny thing is he used to be able to send at home no problem. This problem seems to come & go randomly.

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem?

could be orange are blocking port 25 for outgoing e-mail , found this info from 1&1 web

Enter port 995 in the text box after Incoming server (POP3).
Check the box for This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
Enter port 587 in the text box after Outgoing server (SMTP).
Check the box for This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).

Orange, like many other ISPs, has always blocked all foreign port 25 SMTPs.

You have to Orange's own one to send, but you can use any sending Email and Return addys, or find a non-port 25 SMTP from your mail provider.

Thanks. Tried the ports suggested by Tommy45 but it still didnt work. Have set him up a second email account with incoming configured to 1and1 but outgoing using his own orange account.

Still seems strange that it worked before without having to do this.

Did you set the Outgoing Server as "My server requires authentication" with its 1&1 credentials? Perhaps he omitted that.

I believe there was a period recently when, by mistake, Orange removed the block unintentionally, perhaps only on IPStream lines, but for me on LLU, foreign port 25 SMTPs have always been blocked.
