Changed From LLU

[link to this post]

Changed from LLU a couple of months ago. I am on up to 8meg.

Settled down to:

ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 9.1
Attenuation (dB) : 37.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 7591
ADSL status : Connected [0]

Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 7591 1115

Then went to:

ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 6.1
Attenuation (dB) : 37.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 8530
ADSL status : Connected [0]

Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 8530 1107

I prefer to leave router off overnight but I have been leaving it on. The other night the connection was not happy and running smoothly so I rebooted router.

It came back at just over 2000 on ADSL2+, so I rebooted and it came back at 4500 but on ADSL2 (no plus). It was then running smoothly again.

Now:

ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 6.2
Attenuation (dB) : 37.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 7203
ADSL status : Connected [0]

Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 7203 1103

The clogging up has happened before and it took about 2 weeks to get ADSL2+ back. Having said that speeds were good.

I presume that I am on 21cn but I do not understand why I am loosing the plus.

I was happy with LLU and the new system is about the same. The noise margin was always 9 but of late they have changed it to 6.

Hi, I switch the router off overnight every night and my Orange WBC 20 Meg connection today, has switched from (Channel: Interleaved to Fast). The speed is about the same, but the ping is an incredible 17ms/ Jitter 1ms. ooo

You should be getting about 11 Meg on ADSL2+.

XRaySpeX thanks for the info.

I'm still on up to 8meg. In past I have found it best not to contact Orange because after they make changes you get problems. Having said that I have had a good solid connection with good speed for years.

My line is still with BT but I do make use of the second line off the Livebox.

I've just checked Orange and they are saying:
We've checked out your line and your estimated speed is 6.0 Meg.

Well I've been getting that for a few years now.

Looking at the upgrades it appears they do not offer anything if you want to keep a BT line.

I'm sure that there is no sense it what I am saying, but at present I have a good connection.

Then if you are capped at 8 Meg, you should be getting about 8061 Kbps Sync.

The best I have seen is 7591 and 8530.

Can you explain why it goes between ADSL2 and ADSL2+?

Not really. Maybe you've got a noisy line. When I was on 8 Meg capped ADSL2+ I got a constant 8061 Kbps.

When it happens again, don't wait from them to resync, you do it by rebooting router.

Have you checked your wiring, removed bell wire, checked filters, plugged into test socket behind faceplate?

There is no reason why you shouldn't gain by upgrading to "up to 20 Meg" Simply BB as long as your exchange is 21CN WBC enabled.

Orange's estimates are over cautious. They estimate my line at 11.5 Meg but I never get less than 17 Meg smile

I did the wiring ages ago - I've got no test socket.

I re-booted and got this:

ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2+
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 6.2
Attenuation (dB) : 37.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 8903
ADSL status : Connected [0]

Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 8842 1121

Which is the highest I have ever seen.

Even came back with ADSL2+

FWIW: I don't think you are capped; otherwise you'd never get speeds above 8.2 Meg. So it would not be worth upgrading.

So, there must be other reasons for lowish and variable speeds.

Hi Keith, you are on 21CN WBC ADSL2+ up to 20Meg with your sync upstream 1121Kbps. smile

I know Orange do cap line speeds, on LLU I was capped at 16384Kbps, on WBC they capped my line at 18004Kbps and recently since they switched my connection from Interleaved to Fast, I am now on maximum 24384Kbps. All this has happened without my asking so they are tweaking the connections thankfully.

I don't think that is an ISP imposed cap. For starters, they don't cap at odd speeds.

I think that is what your router reckons as the max speed your line will bear. Other routers call it "Maximum Attainable Rate".

I still think your Sync is about 3 Meg too slow.

I've done the BT test:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 7161 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2000-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8841 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 1121 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7800 Kbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 922 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 1121 Kbps

I'm using a Livebox which I prefer to turn off at night. Since change from LLU I have kept it on. If I turn it off will that cause problems?

Anyone got a view?

You can certainly turn it off overnight. Just don't turn if off frequently, say more than 6 times in an hour.

Thanks, I'll turn it off and report if there are problems.

Almost tempted to re-boot to see if it goes up. But I think I will stick.

Hi XRaySpeX, I dont know where these cap rate settings come from, I dont think it is the router governing them; I think it is coming from the DSLAM. I have been studying this for over twelve months now, wish I Knew the answer.

All I could find on it

http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=p...

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20443236-Speed-Prob...

I know my sync is low, Im now wondering if its the old pre NTE5 socket which has no removable lower half. frown

OK, I agree it's the max speed you could attain if any DSLAM restrictions were lifted, but it is not necessarily an explicit cap on Sync; it could be lowering of Target NM.
