Hi everyone,
(Please bear with, there's alot to explain lol)
I've been with Orange since 2006 on the old Homemax 8meg package, in February this year however I upgraded to 20meg Home Select so I could cater for the increase in computers in our house and to get the new Brightbox as it seemed to promise alot compared with the Jivebox and was billed as a turning point for Orange and it's broadband services.
My Brightbox router stats:
Line Status --- SHOWTIME
Link Type --- Interleaved Path
Operation Mode Automatic G992.5(ADSL2+)
Upstream 1040 (Kbps.)
Downstream 4973 (Kbps.)
Noise Margin Up/Down 4.7 dB 8.4 dB
Line Attenuation Up/Down 17.2 dB 35.0 dB
Output Power 12.2 dBm 20.3 dBm
Fast Path FEC Correction NA NA
Interleaved Path FEC Correction 52016 13
Fast Path CRC Error NA NA
Interleaved Path CRC Error 0 12
Loss of Signal Defect 0 0
Fast Path HEC Error STR NA NA
Interleaved Path HEC Error 0 8
Error Seconds 0 6
Since upgrading I was syncing with the exchange at around 12588 kbps downstream and happily achieving 11meg throughput speeds with 3.5db downstream noise margin. The connection was stable from February 2012 to round about the beginning of June when the connection without warning suddenly disconnected for no apparent reason and left the broadband light flashing. It reconnected eventually but at a pitiful 4300 kbps and a 2meg IP profile (compared to before, I don't wish to offend any long liners out there!) and with a an extremely high downstream noise margin of 17.8db! Needless to say I checked the BT status pages (as I'm 21CN non-LLU) and kept checking for the next few hours but no errors with my exchange appeared.
I am able to connect to the internet but with a very high error rate which causes websites to load more slowly or not at all. The noise margin fluctuates between 4.9db to as high as 17.8db as mentioned previously.
I left the router switched off over night and the next day when I switched it back on the sync was restored and all was well again.....for about 3 hours and then it dropped again resyncing at around 4700 kbps this time.
Over the last 2 weeks the line has kept dropping and resyncing at various different speeds but never above 5000 kbps.
I have contacted Orange 4 times now regarding this problem and I don't think I need to say how well that went. First email support told me that 2meg speeds were the most I was likely to get in my area - OK please explain why I was getting 11.5meg speeds previous to this problem. 2nd email said there could be a fault with the line but I'd need to contact phone support to know for sure. 3rd was a phone call to them and they told me to try the usual, change ADSL filters, cables etc, try wired connection, they then suggested my wireless channel was causing the issue so changed it back to channel 9 from channel 11, it's been on channel 11 from the day I installed it with no issues. Oddly though it did allow me to connect to the internet again but dropped off about an hour later. 4th time was via email again with a long rant then Orange admitted they had limited means of diagnostic there and I would need to contact phone support again. Orange support is not at all helpful, they seem all too happy to sign you up and bribe you to stay with lower prices but actually helping you with any problems doesn't seem to be in their business model - customer since 2006 so had a fair few dealings, why am I still with them I often wonder?
Currently I have stayed connected with the exchange for around 8 days now but the noise margin is all over the place, thankfully not going below 5db though. It would now seem as though my IP profile is stuck? Or does it take longer to change back? Could it be the fluctuating noise margin is my issue and what could cause that after a long period of stability previous to this problem?
Can anybody offer any advice as to the cause of this problem. I appreciate all help in advance.
