We need the attenuation and noise margin figures combined with connection rates to say a lot more than this.

Router has been connected 10 days, and they don't automatically reconnect at a faster speed, so switch it off for a minute and back on again, and see if the speeds improve.

Good point but it's when Orange forget users are now on 21CN and carry forward 20CN restrictions. There are other reports of this at TBB and admitted by Orange ISP Rep here.

When I was 1st moved from LLU to WBC last year my upload was 444K for 1st week, then 888K, then 1.2 Meg+ ; all on ADSL2+.

[re: stevenfrenchy] [link to this post]

Yes 12 Meg should be possible in fact from http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/calc/calculator.php
"Normal speed range at 28.5dB attenuation is 14000 Kbps to 16900 Kbps"

The reason you don't have that sort of speed is the high target noise margin, which is slowing you down, either ISP forced it, or the automatic hardware thinks your line is unstable and increased it to improve stability.

Doing the maths, suggest a connection rate of 18 Meg may be possible, if you were put onto a more normal 6dB target margin.

You could be getting 16 Meg but you are not cuz your NM is too high at 17 dB.

There are known cases of Orange forcing NM too high. You need to speak to Fault Management Team to release it.

I know we may sound a bit demanding, but you'll get used to it, having an idea of your normal stats is also useful to spot if the modem is needing a reboot sometimes too.

i also add to this topic Orange uses stable locking speed profiles so if the connection was left at 6664kbs to long (3days or more not sure what sets speed lock) orange will Lock the speed to 6664 even if it can do twice that, rebooting the router will do nothing as they have told the line to stay at 6664
i have seen 8mb lines locked at 144-65 kbs on an number of times

you most likely need to tell Orange to Reset the line profile (unless you get connected to an UK English person that task could take you an hour to even get them to send that request to line 3 support to reset the profile)

if that does not fix it you got an local fault (is the phone line crackling ?) when you get an make or recive and answer the call (calling 150 from your land line also works if the phone line is with BT or Orange) Look at the status page on the router and see if the Noise margin goes down or if the modem lose the connection completely when in call, if it does there could be an fault in the house somewhere that is doing that, like missing filters or could be an line fault out side of the house

make sure all phones that are connected to the phone line have an ADSL filter connected if you do not that can make your modem relock at lower speeds when your in an phone call and most of the time the modem will not restart the connection when you hang up the call and the modem will stay at the lower speed and as your modem stays on for long time 10 days the first post, if you modem locks on at an slow speed for long time Orange will set the line speed to that permanently until you call orange to reset it again

Balderdash! Speeds are determined by BTw's DLM at connection time. Orange may make the odd mistake and cap a few users' speeds but that is the exception rather than the rule. My profile is quite happily freewheeling for over a year and currently constant at 20.2 Meg for 10 days now simply cuz it hasn't re-synced in that time.

While it may be a slight balderdash, I think Orange may have specified some differences in how the support teams manage the DLM. Orange pays BT Wholesale to manage the service within certain parameters, and may have opted for stability in all cases, which has the side effect of slower sync speeds, hence them appearing lower down the Ofcom speed tables.

There does appear to be a lot more appearance of banded profiles for Orange users than say BT Retail, or Plusnet.

Then I must be privileged to be allowed a 3dB Target NM.

No, there is evidence that Orange were migrating some users to 21CN ADSL2+ but with 20CN profiles by oversight. Yes, their support does have some control of the DLM, particularly Target NM, from their desks.

A restart of the router and grabbing stats straight after may help, but looks very slow. Pointing perhaps to the line being unstable and the automatic systems slowing you down, even after someone resets the systems.

What is the telephone wiring like in the house?

There's your problem! Both are being held artificially high by Orange, even worse than before. You need to get onto Orange to reduce them, as I recommended 3 months ago.

As I said you need to insist on talking to the Fault Management Team.

I think you mean "banded". Orange hasn't been unbundled (LLU) for over 1.5 years

You may not own a phone handset, but you certainly have phone wiring over which the BB travels. That's what MrSaffron was asking about. Phone or not, it can still affect your BB.

EDIT: Anyway, it's worth buying a cheap corded handset so you can check for noise on the voice signal which will certainly feedback to the BB.

I read on these threads about the SNR margin and being held high because of instability.
From my experience, whilst posting re Entanet speed problems. Posters were citing noise being the reason for my SNR margin of 30 by changing supplier margin reduced to 6.
the SNR margin, in my experience ( excluding 9 and 12 ), is that speed is being artificially reduced somewhere when the margin is high as per OP stats.

I notice that the OP had download of 11Mbps only a couple of weeks ago, due to previous banding limit set. Recent stats show Fast Path and minimum errors. Looks more like set for ADSL rather than ADSL2 speeds.

it looks like the only way of resolving problem is to ask for MAC and move to another ISP.

On another EE thread today Mr Saffron stated " Contact ISP as it looks like speeds are being Held by ISP" I wonder why the difference to recent comments on this thread when stats are similar.

To be honest none of us really has a clue only opinions from experience.

Because I am seeing some errors in the stats, which will always result in the automatic systems pushing the user to a 15 dB target margin.

Checking at the test socket and making sure the wiring is not part of the reason the ISP which seems to favour banding more than other ISP's keeps applying it.

Yes, that would normally be the case but with Orange we have too many reports of the NM being high for no apparent reason and in my own past experience of having similar symptoms on a line that is now for ages a rock-solid 20 Meg w/out any change to wiring or anything else at my end. Just needed a formal letter to be written to them smile

Therefore with Orange I am more inclined to suspect the ISP mismanaging the profile than an issue with the wiring. Of course it could be both; Orange have no idea of the quality of your wiring grin.
Looks more like set for ADSL rather than ADSL2 speeds.
Exactly! Orange seem to forget that line is now 21CN and impose 20CN profile on it.

No because WBC ADSL2+ normally has an upstream around double that. Unless this is a uniquely Orange thing - and don't recall it.

The normal range for your attenuation (line length) should be Normal speed range at 31dB attenuation is 12500 Kbps to 16000 Kbps when on ADSL2+.

Your EE Bright Box router Downstream 12012 Kbps is good, but the Upstream 443 Kbps is Rubbish

Try This Go > Advanced Set-Up > Accept > ADSL Mode and select for the ADSL Mode G.992.5 (ADSL2+) then Save Settings.

Now Go > Tools > Restart. The router will reboot and see if it will increase your Upstream to above 1000 Kbps. It did for me! smile

The lower the Target NM, the higher the sync speed (& v.v.), as long as connection stays stable. It is generally reckoned that 3 dB Down & 6 dB Up are the thresholds of stability on most reasonable lines.

It's Orange that needs to release the hold on the NM, not the eng. In fact, I'm surprised that your eng. went away & the Down NM mysteriously reduced, unless he phoned home.

if the upload is always at 443kb (locked low speed profile) you need to give them an ring to reset it

it should be able to do at least 800kb or higher (noise margin is not always around 6 on upstream)
