EE new providers ( problemes have started)

hi there

i just migrated to EE from o2 ( was very good), for cheaper deal anyway i never had problems with previous provider,
the first 2 days have been perfect good speed , no disconnection how ever today really weird , on the computer it has been ok , 13 mb but not constant sometimes i would get only 2 or 3 then come back up but my wife's iphone and mine ,it has been really bad my ping is around 150 ms ( normaly 30 ) and speed is around 1 or 2 even though we are close to the router, and it has been impossible to use bbc iplayer application ( use it for my kids ) or youtube ( bad quality video , on computer buffering ), we have tried at least 20 times today no luck
i just did bbc diagnostic it says my connection is to slow for hd, i used to be able to watch it easily
any help?

Nothing particularly wrong there, is streaming better at a silly time like breakfast? or 3 am?

i have been trying the whole day , i was wondering if that might be the iphone app itself now, some videos work some dont , though the hd bbc quality on the computer is unplayable ,it just would not load , no error message though ,
tried some hd from youtube it works fine on my laptop

weird............

If ok using an ethernet machine then probably not the connection, but congested 2.4GHz wifi spectrum

today it seems to work fine when i go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics#results
it now says that HD videos should , but not yesterday,

your local WiFi congestion. Put router on same channel as you had at O2 then you'll be comparing like-with-like.

I changed it to 7 as no one has it around me , will keep you posted in the couple of days

internet very good fast and reliable ,ps3 pc etc but for some reasons on bbc iphone app not all videos work fine ,no error messages just keep loading

You should find that most people are using 1 6 or 11.
Using 7 is bad generally... You will interfere with routers on channels 6 and 11.

The idea is that channels 1, 6 and 11 is used. Most routers on auto will choose either 1,6 or 11.

Wifi channels 1 overlaps with channels 1, 2 and 3
Channel 6 overlaps with 4,5,6,7,8

Channel 11 overlaps with 9,10,11,12,13

Channel 1 does not interfere with 6 in anyway.
Channel 6 does not interfere with 1 or 11 In any way.
Channel 11 does not interfere with 6 or 1 in any way
Using 1 6 and 11 = problem free wifi.

If you use channels 7 you are overlapping with 5,6,7,8 and 9
So as you can see you pick up interference from the router on channel 6
& you are also overlapping the 11 signal on channel 9

It is better to have 2 routers on the same channel than to have 1 router on channel 6 and another on channel 7. Why?

On the same channel the two routers see one another and avoid the wifi colliding mid air. This results in a very small reduction in speed.

When 1 router is on 6 and another on 7. The routers both don't see each other. Data transmits, collides mid-air, has to be resent, collides, resent, collides, resent = much worse speeds than the same channel example.

So best approach is to stick with 1 6 or 11. Whichevers less congested. Channel 1 is usually bad as lots of doorbells etc use that.

As you can see the 1, 6 and 11 never overlap = don't interfere with one another. Problems occur when users misunderstand the way the frequency works and stick a device on e.g. channel 3. It then messes up 1 and 6.

6 & 7: If they overlap/interfere why cannot they see each other?

If the two routers are on 6 they will be more conservative to avoid collisions.

With 1 router on channel 6 and the other on 7. The routers behave as-if the channels do not interfere with one another.

The router on 6 acts oblivious to the router on 7. Both will happily transmit data wirelessly at the same time and collide with one another over and over again.

That's the point I'm trying to make.

Yes, I know the point you are making.

I'm just asking why a router on 6 is aware of & can detect another router on 6, but it is oblivious & can't detect one one on 7, even tho' 7 overlaps & interferes with 6?

In other words why the "as-if" in your reply above? You are saying that the 2 channels interfere during actual data transmission, but not during detection of presence. Just wondering why cuz the mechanism would seem to be there to detect each other and therefore take the same avoidance action during transmission.

It seems to be worse now I really don't get it , I can't even watch a video on YouTube without buffering on my iPhone , ( fine with laptop , wireless too )
Internet is fast and reliable , it's only for videos on iPhone that's doesn't work properly , YouTube and bbc iplayer , works fine laptop or even samsung tv bbc I player ,
Any suggestions ?

Try channel 1 , 6 and 11

If all deliver the same results its probably the router.

Did the O2 box work fine?

To confirm Ethernet is fine?

ok it seems to be working for the past couple of days , i did a router factory settings i also the intelligent wireless channel in brightbox , i also tried yesterday to use this dual channel bonding but 20/40 mhz but i realized that i lost a bit of speed so i went back to 20 only

hopefully itll stay like this

20mhz travels much further and picks up less interference.

Auto channel can be good especially when people don't abide to 1,6 and 11 as it tries to work around those issues. Sometimes it's a case of choosing the best channel out of several bad ones.

Hopefully it'll be good from now onwards. The brightbox has good reviews on various sites so should really be doing you proud.
