I've just been sent one of these "new" fangled "Bright Box 1" routers, the one shown below:
https://broadband.ee.co.uk/common/img-v2/ill-router1...
https://broadband.ee.co.uk/common/img-v2/ill-router2...
https://broadband.ee.co.uk/common/img-v2/ill-router3...
I just want to know one thing; is this (supposedly) "new and improved" Bright Box 1 actually a new product, or is it just a pretty new casing? It does look nice, but then it's a consumer router that's given away, and we all know how worthless they usually are.

Thought their latest devices were the Brightbox 2
https://broadband.ee.co.uk/ee-bright-box-router2
BB1 is a single band wireless router (i.e. just 2.4GHz) but Brightbox 2 is better as its dual band with support for 802.11ac
The BB1 is fine for general ADSL2+ use, but if on a VDSL2/fibre service the BB2 with better wireless is preferable.

The latest (non-fibre, ADSL) EE router is the BCM6318-based Bright Box 1 (V2), I know this as I have now taken it apart and am taking photos of the layout inside - it's a different device.
Here's a photo of the device - the style is similar to Bright Box 2, but it's not the same, and it's smaller:

So the Brightbox Box 1 is newer than the Bright Box 2 - and they've released a new device with only ADSL2+ mode and single band wireless?
Have known of existence of Brightbox ones for a long time.

There are now three Bright Box routers in existence:
#1: Bright Box (original, v1, 2012, ADSL) - https://web.archive.org/web/20150321050816/https://b...
#2: Bright Box 2 (Fibre & ADSL) - https://broadband.ee.co.uk/ee-bright-box-router2
#3: Bright Box 1 (newer v2, new design, new SoC, ADSL) - https://broadband.ee.co.uk/ee-bright-box-router
"Have known of existence of Brightbox ones for a long time."
I am unsure of the intent of your question, please disambiguate, thank you

The Brightbox 2 is only supplied for Fibre (but I have wangled one ) . So EE have now updated the ADSL supplied Brightbox 1, which therefore postdates the Brightbox 2.
I think it's called the Brightbox 1R, but if it isn't that makes the one OP is talking about the 4th Brightbox varient.

Yes, it is the BB 1 (R). All 3 variants of the Brightbox can be seen on Phones and devices guides by ticking "Home broadband".
The BB1R is about at least 1 year old and is a new version of the ADSL BB1 in a BB2-shaped case. EE offered me 1 last year but only sent me the original BB1 .
