cannot access usb stick on laptop on EE Smart Hub

[link to this post]

Hi, I can access my usb stick attached to EE Smart Hub on my desktop. However I cannot access it on my laptop. I get access to the Smart Hub instead. A lot of people seem to have the same issue alas no solution. I am using windows 10..

If the Smart Hub does support USB storage you would normally have to configure this in the web interface for the smart hub.

Lots of providers routers with USB do not support a storage mount for a USB stick, but the intent is the USB is for future/current backup 4G connectivity

Enable SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support in Windows Features. Win 10 started disabling this sometime in its life. This will fix it.

The USB on the EE SH is not there for future expansibility but for USB storage. It does not need any prior config but just stick a USB in & it becomes available.

Hi, many thanks for your reply. would you please tell me how to do what you suggested. What is strange is for EE provide the facility for attaching a USB knowing it would not work.

What xrayspex said has triggered the memory, and yes microsoft did disable the file sharing,

Cannot recall though when this happened and been a long time since I've used router storage, the ones I did some years ago needed configuring, but sounds like the Brightbox is easy, just a case of getting the PC to be happy.

Hi, I managed to carry out what you suggested alas it did not work. Strangely enough I can access USB stick on my desktop, but not every time. It is hit and miss.

The same would go for BT. The EE SH is a badged engineered BT SH, which probably pre-dates Win 10.

What OS is the Desktop running?

Did the desktop already have SMB 1.0 enabled?

As I said it was disabled sometime in Win 10's life. If you bought the desktop before the lappy spanning that time, the desktop would have SMB 1.0 enable & the lappy not.

Actually I've just remembered. If your PC had a fresh install of Win 10, SMB 1 will be disabled, but if it was upgraded to Win 10 from Win 8.1 or earlier, SMB 1 will be enabled (or whatever you left it at before).

It matters not if your Win 10 is up-to-date or not. Updates don't mess around with user-configurable values like SMB 1 state.

Not usually, but some updates do disable vulnerable or deprecated protocols and services - see https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/08/windows_10_...

But soon after reenabled it again. It never affected me at that time.

Could the laptop be running Windows 10 Pro and the desktop standard Windows 10....
