DC Universe Online faulty disc(s)....

[link to this post]

Ok so I just got my copy today in the post from Game, came to install it on my PC everything was going ok till I came to disc 3 to discover that my computer could not read it at all hence I had to cancel the install and return it to game.

So anyone else got there copy yet from Game or where ever and having to return it cos of a faulty disc etc?

just wondering if i'm the only one or its going to turn in to a common problem.

I cannot believe I haven't seen ANYTHING about this before until now! Maybe I did in the past but just didn't realise! Tempted to get a copy of it, but stopped playing MMO's after I got sucked into WoW, will have to check it out online....

Sorry, I know this isn't helpful to what you asked, but I love a few DC characters so I'm intrigued now!

If you had a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation plus Jaxx you could have played the beta that took about 4 hours to download,i got bored and gave up when i realised and its not really my type of game anyway and the only reason i tried to download it was it was free to play in the beta for Playstation plus subscribers.

If you have not got Playstation plus then dont bother as basically its a complete load of garbage for a extra £40 a year with content you have probebly already purchased or have little to no interest in.

Apart from the few beta going there is very little in there to warrant £40.

The only reason i have kept Spliter Cell Convition 360 was to play the beta for the new Ghost recon game Future soldier that should have been released for beta last December if not before.

Bulletstorm next month are trying to tempt people with the special edition to play the beta for Gear of War 3....................

Well I agree it may not be worth paying full price for if you get it for under £20 (PC verison) like i did from Game as I had some loyalty points saved up with them.
Then its worth a go to see if you like it or not also its free to play for up to 30 days. After which its like £10-15 a month.

Yeah most online games require you to pay a monthly sub and those that don't put limits in place e.g. lord of the rings online.

I don't know of any console games that charge a subscription to play monthly online,i know pc game WOW you have to pay but that's about it as far as i knew.

Are you suggesting that this DC Universe on consoles is going to be subscription to play...........mad

Just had a quick look at the online retailer i use and the bottom paragraph rings true to what you say...............Oh my god i do hope this is not the future and to be perfectly honest and no disrespect to you as you have the game i hope it bombs BIGTIME.
I just can not see this doing well on consoles with a monthly subscription of £10 and as far as i am aware THIS IS A CONSOLE FIRST.........and I'm not on about paying a year subscription to xbox live to play neither.

What a dam cheek this is and i suspect its going to get other publishers on the band wagon to do the same.

Just took a look at the game play on youtube and i know Graphics are not everything but this looks like a playstation 1 game from about 10 years ago.............And they want people to pay for this.................

DC Universe online WILL be pay to play on consoles as its an MMO, its an MMO on PC and it'll be an MMO on consoles - I dont think it will be same realms for all platforms though, expect platform dependant (i'm not 100% on realm details, you'd have to check yourself).

Final fantasy 11 was an MMO on consoles as was phantasy star online.

Graphically on consoles sacrifices will have to be made due to the amount of network traffic and other people/customisation that has to be rendered. I would imagine voice would be the primary communication too.

BTW the PC had a free beta too, closed one and one for preorders.

wy2k - Surely you can download the rest of the game? Faulty disks do happen, i'd check the dev's forums if its a wide spread problem, but i'd imagine theres some sort of method in place to download the rest of the files.

not sure I can download the rest of the game as you suggest, at least not with out paying for it again. Anyway I'm now waiting on a replacement copy so fingers crossed that won't be faulty.
I know it might not be an excellent game or do very well. But since I managed to get for £12.50 (I redeemed Game points) and the first month is free, thought its worth a go smile.

DC Uni online is only on the PS3 and PC. If you get it for PS3 I believe the monthly sub is included in the monthly PS3 sub you may be paying already to get the latest demos etc.

I'm sure you'll be able to download an installer online, the install discs for a MMO become obsolete pretty quickly. All you really need is the install key, the discs may as well go into the loft if you're feeling sentimental or the bin if you're not smile

Your right I've find out you can download an installer for the game however it will most likely be a massive download given that game comes on 3 cd's.
I only have a 1mb connection so installing off cd's would be the faster option for me.
Anyway you need an activition code which I no longer have as I returned the game to be exchanged for a new copy.

thanks anyway.

time2die, games like COD etc. won't charge for it. It has always been standard to charge a monthly subscription for MMO's, I've played them for years and have been hooked on 4 or 5 and all of them have always charged, it's how they make their money. Unfortunately the £20 disk for WoW would not support all the servers they have to run, the ongoing development, the GM's wages etc. Games like COD are different as the player hosts the game, so no need for them to pay for hundreds or thousands of servers like Blizzard have to.

Hope that explanation helps smile

There is mention from that Bobby guy from Activision that they may look into the Cod Games in the future as a pay as you play feature.

Just out of interest Jaxx what exactly is MMO's, Obviously because i don't play these type of games the abbreviation that you use is not familiar to me.

Cheers for the info all the same and let me know what you think of the game if you go out and buy buy it.

Lots of stuff over the next few weeks and i have 5 games pre/ordered as of now with Little Big Planet 2 due next week.

Most looking forward to Killzone 2 and Bulletstorm in Feb

Games companies have already adopted the DLC model for FPS games as a way to earne xtra revenue so maybe pay as you play will indeed be the next stage. However, I cannot see myself paying a monthly fee for a FPS game. I would like to think the FPS community would have a massive backlash against such a move... I hope!

I don't think FPS games have enough depth to warrant a monthly fee, say for instance COD said now it's going to be £5 per month, I'd want a hell of a lot more from the game than a handful of maps and game modes. I'd also want them to provide the servers for hosting the matches to prevent latency issues that I get now and then.

For me with MMO's I used to play them before I got an Xbox 360, I was hooked on WoW for a year or so and used to play a few others which you probably won't have heard of. But when you play an MMO that is pretty much all you play, they suck you in so you only play that game, so you can justify the £9 per month because you're not going out buying 1 or 2 games a month at £40 a pop.

Now that I have discovered the joys of the Xbox though I couldn't warrant paying £9 per month for WoW or DC online because I wouldn't play it all the time, I'd still pay other games so to me, it would be a waste of cash.

hi,
me again it's taken this longer (about 10 days) to get a new copy of dc universe (pc) and yet again i've disc 3 is not being read cos of marks etc on it i assume. I would download it but I'm assuming its like a massive file i.e 10gb or more?

update - well bitten the bullet and chosen to download the game -12.5gb not including any patches! But I used the game code that came with the discs rather then send it back again and wait longer on the off chance that 3rd time its ok!
