As Expected Brink reviews Hit and Miss Mainly Miss

[link to this post]

So the reviews of Brink have been Flooding in and they are a mixed bag to say the least, there are a few 4/5 and the odd 9/10 but i would say the majority are more like the review from IGN and that was a 6/10.

Time and Time again we are led to believe that a developers game is going to be something special only to find out by the review scores its average at best.

Another game that looks like a contender for the bargin bin department sooner rather than later judging by the scores.

Still i will check it out i might find that its better than expected.

And as i have been saying THIS sums it up for me regarding Sony and there online problems.

As i have said in a previous post just imagine this Sony Problem if it had happened this November at the time of COD MW3 and Battlefields 3.....Oh my God the revenue that they and the developers would lose and the amount of people that would have jumped on the Xbox 360 band wagon............The mind Boggles.

Having said that i bet you that Sony would have had there online in place or would have made promises if this was the week of the Big Hitters been released.

Always check this SITE for the review scores from both the gaming press and the users.....

Its not all that bad but i expected a lot better when i watched previews of the game and the developers telling us this is going to be something special,i understand that they are going to say positive things about the game but the game don't match the pre/rendered videos and the graphics look dated at best.

The reviews (more what they said not the scores) tipped me off the fence towards a "skip" than a "buy", i'm enjoying other games mostly indie and my old stomping grounds of APB than main titles.

If brink has a community left by the time its on a crazy cheap sale i might pick it up, but i smell death around it like i smelled with quake wars, concept is good, just the play base can't fit into it and leaves. The destructoid review pretty much sums up how i feel about it in the end lines, something like the guy reviewing it loves it beyond its faults, but if someone wants to dislike it then he can perfectly accept that as their faults are valid. Obviously in my case i dislike like its execution, but if people actually enjoy it i can accept why they enjoy it, it is probably good fun, just not for me at this time.

That should be interesting! I look forward to it. wink

Gave it a go on the PC.

Don't like it at all.
Plays in the style of Quake 3.
BUT
With the sluggishness of Gears of War.

Recoil is horrible, with Smg's being spray and pray and still win, yet assault rifles doing slightly more damage miss a lot so they lose regardless of the range.

The AI doesn't know what difficulty setting it's on, ie will run around dumb, but when they see you fire more bullets into your chest before you can iron sight.

Visually it's got style like APB had. Clever character design. Except the graphics can jump to hideous like some of the gun textures.

It's got a unlock galore system with customising each and every single gun individually which is great. Although some of the unlocks are next to hopeless.

So like the reviews said, got potential, but poor execution leaves it struggling. Maybe a few patches could address the issues and fix game breaking unbalances in some of the weapons.

Had the game arrive this morning and i was so excited i actually loaded it in my Playstation 3 about 30 minutes ago and now i am typing .

So on that logic its not hard to think what i think of the game,i very much doubt this game will see daylight again because basically on the brief 20 minutes i played it i thought it was dire..........

Terrible sounds.terrible graphics, sluggish feel with popguns for weapons and basically i don't want to talk anymore about it because it really pains me to think i actually went ahead and got this tripe even though review scores were all over the place and the fact that some of the more recent videos i watched it looked pants anyway.

I shall try it tomorrow but first impressions are what counts in my book and it looks like a Alan Sugar to me.......................YOUR FIRED mad

One of the main things that's wrong with gaming today imo, all this achievement and unlocking is designed to distract people from how badly designed most games are these days. Glad it hasn't worked in this case.

I don't think it's designed to take people away from how bad the design is, there have always been bad games. But I do think it effects peoples play style, I usually check out the achievements before I start playing the game and if there are ones for completing a game on medium, hard etc. I usually jump straight in on the hardest setting and sometimes this has led to less enjoyment of a game because you spend time trying to do the stupid little achievements.

Nowadays I don't play as much so I tend to just play through a game and not worry about getting the whole 1,000, I'm just happy picking up the 500 - 600 for completing it or whatever.

I think achievements / trophys are a good idea, the concept has always been around, I remember playing Sonic on the Mega Drive over and over trying to beat my completion time, or playing Streets of Rage and trying not to use a continue through the whole thing. It's nice to now actually get something that people can look at and seen you have done it rather than just telling people.

Personally i think achievements are a waste of time and i never actually bother trying to get the ones listed,to me there is little incentive because apart from some achievements icon they are worthless.

If you got paid Microsoft points for doing something really hard then that would make it a much more rewarding experience.

I tend to get achievements as i play the various games but i dont care for looking at the blanked out icons and then spend anytime trying to get them.

I just hope LA NOIR Next weeks gets the review scores i expect from Rockstar because Brink is a total Joke as far as games go.

I am not interested in unlocks or achievements, but i definitely remember trying to do this in Sreets of Rage (amongst other games).

Continues used to be the Holy Grail, lol! smile

I used to feel the same, I actually thought at first that the achievements I were getting could be traded in for something then when I realised they couldn't I thought what's the point? But nowadays both my housemates have a 360, a lot of my friends have a 360 and it's something to compare with each other. I play a lot of online games like Battlefield with my friends and housemates and it's nice when downloadable content comes out to get the new achievements, because rather than just playing online and levelling up there are achievements for using setups / classes I wouldnt of tried before so I try it and find that I like them.

As well as that I think (for me) playing a single player game without achievements would be boring, I think (no offence meant by following statement) that you are quite a simple gamer t2d, you mainly care about graphics, sound effects and completing a game within a couple of days. For me I prefer to get more for my money and like to compare stats to friends to see who did better on that game, for me gaming is about competition and without achievements there would be no competition and therefore would make it not as fun. I don't particularly care if a game has graphics that are similar to games seen 5 years ago, as long as I enjoyment out of it and the gameplay / story is good and has a competitive aspect, that to me is a good game.

I think if I was a "lone" gamer and didnt play online with friends or didnt have many friends to talk about games with then I would be more like you, but because I have a lot of friends that play the same games as me and do the same things achievements are an important part of the gaming section.

In addition to the above, I tend to ignore reviews, my housemate will only buy a review if its got a good score on Metacritic, but there have been plenty of games I have played that have had not so good reviews on there but I have really enjoyed them. I don't care if the graphics aren't absolutely amazing, as long as the game / story grips me thats all that matters. I could never pickup a game play it for 30 minutes and then say "Its a terrible game im taking it back" because that to me is a sign of ADHD lol tongue

No mate the term simple gamer does not really sum me up at all ,what i am is fussy about the games i buy and what i expect from games in the 21st century.

Its quite sad when games such as Brink with all the developer hype and the previews from gaming websites telling us how great this game is going to be with there advanced this and advanced that.............Then Shock! Horror we get a game that looks like it could have been made in 2008 if not before.

I think gaming developers have to set new standards when releasing new games and look at previous stuff and ask themselves some simple questions like.......Does are game give uncharted 2 for example a run for the money.

I get mighty disappointed at the laziness and design from developers like Splash Damage,i mean the warnings were in place before this got released as there portfolio is not all that good now is it............Quake Wars and a load of other garbage.

I don't want to finish a game in 2 days mate and i love them when they last for ages, the only thing you got right Jaxx is the fact that what you do is against a lot of other mates and i only play online with one friend.

Add to that i am more than likely considerably older than you and i also don't have the time and patience like i did in my early gaming days of the past.

For me First impressions count as soon as i see the intro of a new game and the first 10 minutes i play it i have to be impressed with what i see and how it plays.

There are many games that have exceeded my expectations, games like Just Cause 2,Bulletstorm,Dead Space 1 and 2,Crysis 2 and a load of others to many to mention.

But on that note there are many that have been released that have not met my expectations and quickly get traded while the value remains high..........Brink is one of those games and i don't tend to keep anything that i have no intention of playing.

A game to me is like trying a pair of shoes on,you either like them or you don't and there is little difference when it comes to booting up a new game.

I can actually say that whenever i play a game for 10 or 20 minutes which i dislike with a passion such as Brink i never have regrets and end up buying it back in the future.............

Its not just my views regarding Brink the review scores actually speak for themselves,i grant you that some have given it positive scores but the majority are average at best.

Most people will use reviews scores as a guide to judge if they buy the game or not,me i am often stupid because even though the reviews scores were quite negative i still allowed the pre/order to arrive hoping that may be i might like something about the game.

Sadly i have got to be more wise in the future and and cancel pre/orders of games that are getting some serious negative reviews because as we know most of the negativity turns out to be quite useful quotes .....Its a expensive hobby to ignore reviews and buy everything you fancy.

Another pointer as to this game not matching previews and hype is the fact there was no demo...............When that happens that is normally a warning sign that developers have little faith in there product and think a demo would reflect poor sales.

Developers should realise there is no hiding place with the Internet and the amount of people that will dish a certain game,be it a website or a person that has the game early news will get out about a possible Turkey and sales will be impacted regardless of Hype.

Actually Jaxx while we are on the subject and i was trading in that other junk Dragon rising from codemasters..........I picked up a cheapo game from some 3 years back just to get a gaming fix ............Thats game Ghost recon 2.........Now that game is 3 years old if not older and it trances games of today and is a great tacticle shooter with some fantastic graphics.

Now originally i owed that game but after a year or so or when you start having to many games and you move on to others i traded it,but what a breath of fresh air to play it over again and see what can be done when developers put there mind to it.
