Okay so first shooter on a PC for a few years...and never again.
50MB origin system
3.5GB download
then fails to run saying update graphics drivers 100MB again
Then fails to recognise login in Origin software, website game browser works, but on launching BF3 wants to verify via Origin again.
Mmmm now I remember why I prefer the game console experience. Download and play,. less faffing around and wasted time.

Andrew,
I had to update my GFX drivers as well but once that was sorted everything went very smooth. I didnt experience any of the other issues you have.

Indeed it is too hot! I did read somewhere that the nvidia drivers improved performance by up to 38% which sounds astonishing. I have ordered a new nvidia card but my old HD4850 ran fine without the most up-to-date drivers but I stuck the new ones on anyway!

I'll pre-empt an issue for you: Turn off UPNP on your router if you have issues connecting to servers.
I didn't have this problem with my netgear 834gt, but my mate's BEbox wasn't happy, probably need to config it but would rather not until I know what ports to cone.

Get afterburner (not sure if it's compatible, but your card is basicly a 4850/4870) on http://downloads.guru3d.com/-MSI-Afterburner-2.2.0-B... and sort out your gpu clock to 700ish, run at less than 1440x900 resolution and you should be good to go.

Found updated drivers but alas card does not want to play ball checked using 3D Mark and only Directx 10.0 support, need 10.1 at least

That sounds like a hell of an ordeal. It's really odd that I didn't have anywhere near as much hassle installing the beta. The hardest thing was recovering my EA password/s.

Not sure if it is related but I am using Chrome as my browser with no issues at all.

Had no problem with the browser mate. Was using Firefox 7xx. Just didn't know my EA login details.
Having said that the game launcher isn't working for me today. So maybe I will try another browser after all?
EDIT:
NOTICE Be advised: Game launching is currently disabled due to restart of the Battlefield 3 PC back-end.
Merde!

Get dxsetup up and make sure that you have the latest installed. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35
Don't worry about what gets reported, as long as dx10 is working as the game uses dx11 as the hal so disables features accordingly.
