I must admit I'm not impressed.
I know it's still early and it needs patching but it's not as good as I expected it to be.
Here are a few of the things I don't like
Anti aircraft guns are no where to be seem and next to useless.
Passenger gun on heli seems to have no effect on tanks.
Vehicles don't have the same solid feel as in BC.
Far too much writing on the screen (count downs for flags etc)
Enemy players have two logos above their heads. A triangle and a star. Tried shooting both but still don't hit the player.
Capture flag area seems to be massive making it hard to find the player and put a stop to him and his devilish ways.
Two sets of dog tags. One with your name which is fine but another BS tag that you can customise MW style.
The screen goes all fuzzy with pretend interference on the menus screens.
The old end of game summery was much clearer and more useful on seeing how well you got on.
It just seems a mess to me
What do you think needs fixing??

Never mind Swanny there is always that Kiddie game on the Horizon called MW3.
Doesn't it have a first day patch already ?
Must admit this is quite a surprise coming from you who loves Battlefield games and was quite excited by this release, seems your not on your own Swanny as you can see from previous posts that others that have similar views from other gaming sites.
What makes me laugh is that this game was going to blow MW3 out of the water but i think even when they fix some of the many known issues its not really going to have any impact on MW3 sales.
Its not nice looking forward to a game all year and to find it hasn't hit the dizzy heights we all expected,i just pray to God that in 10 days time i don't come on these very forums as frustrated and as disappointed as you feel at this moment.
Because as much as i love COD games if i feel the game is a step back in direction or has some serious issues i will post about it.
I have to admit I'm really hyped for MW3 and i really think its going to be a class product and meet my expectations based on the previous two games that i spent many months playing.

This kind of game probably goes a long way in justifying the likes of Origin and Steam for their automated game patching systems.
Patches for Battlefield games? Well, it's almost as if patches were invented for the series. There must have been about 6 for BF1942 and BF2. Well, no need for a history lesson but let's say there are bound to be about a million little fixes for BF3.
Yeah, I commented about the AA guns in the beta. They are rubbish as they are. Don't forget the vehicles have unlocks just as personnel do and a lot of them at that. That said, I wouldn't expect it'll make much difference. Having watched some Youtube videos, it does look like the stinger missiles have a good impact on helos at least though their effect might be a bit too aggressive it seems.
I don't care for much of the console-ification of the game with all the graphics added explaining things either. I would have liked to have seen larger text for when you type messages into the console thing, it's really hard to see what's going on. Guess that might not be such a bad thing really as I should be paying more attention to what's actually going on on the battlefield.
Massive flag capture area, I agree. I've been playing BF1942 lately (yes really!) and the capture area is very large there too but because there is so much less foliage and the playing area is pretty bare in the main, it's much easier to see who's holding up your capture. The increased foliage and hiding spots is really a game changer but hopefully we'll get used to it.
I would love to have the opportunity to go into games companies' headquarters and sit down with them to let them know how I think they could improve their games. Trouble is for a short window, once they've got a game published that's it, they move onto the next money earner and that's it, you're stuck with a game with loads of little niggling problems and they all add up to be a much bigger sore point with those actually playing the game. I agree that menus and end game summaries and the like should be much better designed, it's a real shame to see the screens dumbed down and lacking information.
Anyway, my copy should be getting here soon. Today. Tomorrow? I am eager to play. I paid for first class delivery and I expect it'll be no better than the free one Amazon do. Expletive!

You've answered your own point here. The icons are ABOVE their heads - try shooting at the player instead!!. FYI, the triangle shows the players location, the star denotes that they are the squad leader

Maybe I should say don't waste your money on an inferior game to what MW3 is going to be but that might provoke a reaction

Now you have started WW3 Matey

I wouldn't bring that topic up again
Merely making a point!

I passed on Battlefield 3 today and resisted the temptation to buy a game for once in my life,i would like to see the thoughts and opinions of the people that like Battlefield to be honest especially on these forums.
I just hope that you and myself don't come on here in about 10 days saying how awful MW3 is, but i just can not see that happening as i know what to expect and everything that i watch is pure MW and that suits me fine.

I have to admit I dont like the BF series anyway. I know quite a few of my friends have bought it and even if they said amazing things about it I still dont believe it would tempt me. I would be confident MW3 will be a polished version of MW2 with bits of previous COD's thrown in. Unless the servers crash I dont care how it is as love the COD series anyway and if multiplayer sucks there will be plenty to do in story mode and spec ops

Ha. Funny. I think Swanny's probably aware that you need to shoot the player but perhaps he's getting a bit senile in his old age?

Anti aircraft guns are no where to be seem and next to useless.
Stinger, Mobile AA tanks. Unlockable Heat seeking missiles for the AA vehicles. Play better and unlock them...
Passenger gun on heli seems to have no effect on tanks.
Passenger gun on heli is actually pretty good at killing tanks if you aim at the right places and hit with most shots it takes 2 or 3 burst to disable a tank. But you can unlock guided missiles, and TV missiles for the gunner position......Shoot some more people and you will have access to these.
Vehicles don't have the same solid feel as in BC.
Unlock reactive armour, smoke, optics, Faster auto repair etc etc to make tanks better. Also dont be foolish and drive into an enclosed space where 3 rpg men are hiding
Far too much writing on the screen (count downs for flags etc)
Slightly maybe. Seems fine at 1920x1200 though..
Enemy players have two logos above their heads. A triangle and a star. Tried shooting both but still don't hit the player.
Not much i can say here except... LOL and ROFL.
Capture flag area seems to be massive making it hard to find the player and put a stop to him and his devilish ways.
Seems no bigger than BF2 was.. Its fine.
Two sets of dog tags. One with your name which is fine but another BS tag that you can customise MW style.
Errr so what ?
The screen goes all fuzzy with pretend interference on the menus screens.
Its a menu... who cares?
The old end of game summery was much clearer and more useful on seeing how well you got on.
If you are taking about BF2, then i agree.

I can not see the multiplayer been lacklustre mate to be honest because this is its strongest point, survival looks well cool and teaming up with a decent buddy then i think its a few hours of enjoyment.
Multiplayer would have been where i spent all my time on but like i said im so looking forward to Survival just as much.

Blimey Death where have you been for the last 9 years?
Anti aircraft guns are no where to be seem and next to useless.
Stinger, Mobile AA tanks. Unlockable Heat seeking missiles for the AA vehicles. Play better and unlock them...
Is there an unlock that will improve the field of vision???
Far too much writing on the screen (count downs for flags etc)
Slightly maybe. Seems fine at 1920x1200 though..
Guess you're not playing on a PS3 then
Enemy players have two logos above their heads. A triangle and a star. Tried shooting both but still don't hit the player.
Not much i can say here except... LOL and ROFL.
Yea thanks for that.
Capture flag area seems to be massive making it hard to find the player and put a stop to him and his devilish ways.

Haven't played BF2 for years, compared to BFBC2 it's massive.
Vehicles don't have the same solid feel as in BC.
Unlock reactive armour, smoke, optics, Faster auto repair etc etc to make tanks better. Also dont be foolish and drive into an enclosed space where 3 rpg men are hiding laugh
Nothing to do with the feel of driving them, they just seem to float along rather than the more planted feel of BFBC2.
Thanks for the tip about the PRG men :/
Two sets of dog tags. One with your name which is fine but another BS tag that you can customise MW style.
Errr so what ?
One of the things I enjoyed about the battlefield series was that it wasn't bloated out with [censored] like extra tags AKA MW style. Personally I couldn't give a monkeys if someone has an extra tag with some picture of a gun or something else that means nothing to the gameplay.
The screen goes all fuzzy with pretend interference on the menus screens.
Its a menu... who cares?
Me
See you in 2020

I typed out a 5000 word review and then deleted it by accident. You lucky lot.
So I'll sum it up:
Visuals are poor. Not terrible but not what I was hoping for. And I'm talking MOH or Homefront standard. Too much on screen for the consoles to cope with I'm afraid. Less would have been more for the PS3 I think.
Controls are very badly weighted, but that is a trait of all the BC games I have played, so I was expecting that. I kind of feel they're set up with a mouse in mind but who knows. All I can say is the swing is completely unbalanced. And before anybody comes out with the "realistic controls" retort, it isn't. It really isn't. Unless of course you attend the Alan Carr school of marksmanship.
But wait for it....I quite enjoyed my first four hours with it last night. Co opus ridiculously difficult but fun. That will probably become far easier when the controls start to feel native.
Single player? Ripped straight from the pages of BLOPS in it's approach. It's ok, and I thought there were some great visuals/lighting. The volumetric smoke type effect was awesome. But it was too good for the backdrop on the PS3 and stuck out like a sore thumb!
And I don't mind my campaign "on rails" if it brings the bog cinematic sequences. But this really felt "ON RAILS", and was almost trying too hard. I am enjoying it though and it may improve as I get further in.
Overall I would say that on the next gen console (if they re weighted the steering!) this would have me converted to a BF3 fan. But for now I'm afraid I think MW3 will be the better game this generation.

Get a PC.
FPS on a console ? You have no right to complain.

I tried the AA for ages tonight. Complete and utter waste of space.
Looks like the ranking system is too low. Played against level 30, 25 and 20 tonight.
I liked the fact that I have been playing BFBC2 for 271h 54m and am still only level 38
Oh well it's a shame when a game fails

One thing I will say Swanny, is that the hit detection is good. You've all heard me bleat on about FPS MP being unplayable for me. I know, yawn right?
Well I am pleased to announce that this game couldn't feel further away from that!
Other PS3 games have had dedi's and have still been unplayable. It's the server browser that has made all the difference. It would be nice to narrow it down further with some numbers, but hey ho.
I think COD will have to step up to the mark on the consoles next time out. If it played like this I would be a very happy bunny. I might even give it a miss for MP by sticking to spec ops and survival mode and keeping this as my online fix for now. Those PC gamers have obviously had it good for too long, it's time for the console kids to get the browser option aswell.
What do you think of the visuals Swanny? I like the graphics and detail overall, it's just the definition seems pretty rough around the edges. And on the bigger maps it gives gaming pensioners like me eye strain.

Aha! But you'll never take me alive!!
When it's not hurting my eyes (and it's not always that bad) I'm quite enjoying it. The ground vehicles are great fun. But dont worry. I'm still properly pumped for MW3 spec ops.

I've had a headache all day today I wonder if it's because of last nights BF3 session??
Can't be the beer
|
|

if you'd have seen me in that helicopter last night you'd have thought I'd been on the beer.
The truth of the matter is it wasn't my fault. It was "the wrong type of helicopter". I was expecting the uppy downy lefty righty model.

Oh that one. That's old hat I'm afraid.
Welcome to the Battlefield school of flying - it's more uppy, downy, rotaty lefty righty with a bit of old pitchy-witchy thrown in for good measure.
Takes ages to master but at least it's the same scary way of doing things as it was in previous outings.

I had an upside downity one

The beta was full of those as I remember...

Hey man if your enjoying it then thats what its all about and im glad that there is much about the game that you like.

They are working on a patch. Lets hope it arrives soon
DICE is currently working on a Battlefield 3 patch that will improve a number of things, fix some issues, and so on whatever a patch is supposed to do. But the upcoming patch will also tweak some gameplay elements like weapons and vehicles, chief of which are the jets. If youve tried to fly a jet in Battlefield 3, youd know that the entry bar is very steep: you are only given access to a machine gun, which is incredibly hard to rake up any points with in order to get any useful weapon unlocks, like air to air missiles or even flares.
But according to DICEs Frederik Thylander (via Twitter), jets are getting buffed up in an upcoming Battlefield 3 patch. Thylander responded to complaints from users that jets are underpowered, which they in many ways are in their current form. Its still unknown what kind of upgrades jets might receive, but at the very least, we hope that flares are available as standard.
|
|
|
|
As has been mentioned the AA guns are beyond useless - it is almost impossible to judge how far you need to lead a target due to not really being able to tell how close the jet is to you. I spent about 2 mins in 1 and then got out. Given that you can unlock the stinger quickly as an engi everyone can be an anti air gun if they bother.
