Your Game of the Year 2011..?

[link to this post]

Many disappointments and for a while i had to seriously think about it,last night after a couple of months break from nearly all games i loaded Gears Of war 3.

After getting involved with some other guys in a match of Horde mode and downloading some new stuff for it then for me on the Xbox 360 this is my game of the year.........Pure Class.

Not totally sure about the Playstation 3 at present but Uncharted 3 has to be up there even though i love MW3
it loses out for not taking the graphics up a notch and not doing much difference from the previous one 2 years before.

For me it's Uncharted 3 without a doubt.

If it's not a fast and furious FPS game, then I need really immersive storytelling to stop the feeling that I'm simply looking down on the action. UC3 carries that off beautifully.

Dead Space is a different kettle of fish graphically and after a couple of hours play last night, it is already signposted story wise. That said I damn near shat my pants a couple of times around midnight. The sound in that game played via the surrond sound literally scared the wits out of me at times. It gets so intense, that even though you know mr mutant scissor your b****x has just popped out behind you, you still don't want to turn around! The graphics are not unpretty, but it's the sound that really makes this game shine. And I'm loving it.

Unless it does something silly later on, this is already my game of 2008. Better late than never. tongue

Fantastic game dead space, turn it up loud, turn off all the lights and there's nothing quite like it

Shame the second one isn't as good.

For me:
360 - Foza 4
PS3 - Uncharted 3

I thought Dead Space 2 was even better than the first and that takes some beating for sound and tension alone.

Sound tracks in games and even films can make the difference and like mrnelster says dead space has nailed the sound in this game.

And there i was mrnelster thinking you were a hardcore gamer and he picks up dead space 3 years later.....wink.........only playing matey.

And Swanny must have been knocked out as he is suffering from a little bit of concussion as he said Battlefield 3 is his game of the year, thats like me saying Duke Nukem Forever is my pick for 2011 tongue

I think I will have to go with BF3 as well. I have sunk a lot of hours into it and I am still not bored of it.

I am trying to think what else I have played this year. BC2 before BF3 but I won't be going back to that. Portal 2 was of course fricking awesome... just short. Orcs must die and Defense grid: the awakening were 2 small titles that were hugely enjoyable.

That's "quartered", genius. Courted? Yeah, lovely. tongue

But I do agree with the sentiment that any publisher with the balls to release total cr^p like Pukem really ought to be banned from gaming for life.

My game of 2011 is... drum roll.... SKYRIM!!

Okay, not an imaginative choice perhaps as it's really just Oblivion 2.5 (haha). Plenty of value for money if you consider all the hours worth of gaming you can get from it.

I tend not to play multiplayer anymore (other than co-op with mates) due to my connection issues (you may have heard about them tongue).

Accordingly, I have re discovered third person after UC3 and (due to T2D's
recommendation of the year) the brilliant Dead Space (the one you traded without playing lol!). And it has made me appreciate gaming again, as opposed to online gaming.

And for that reason I have been gazing longingly at Skyrim on you tube (loving the FPS approach), but I don't think I'm going to risk it for a biscuit unfortunately. Well not until I see if the awaited patch works for the PS3 at least.

So cruel of you to remind me - some happy gamer somewhere got something out of it at least.

I basically did a T2D and having decided I didn't like it after half an hour or so, I shelved it, then took it to a charity shop.

Missed the Steam sale for Dead Space 1/2 so that's me out of the action until it's cheap again. Probably wouldn't even play it anyway, even if I did get it.

I would say Skyrim is great on PC at least. Had a go on my sister's Xbox over Xmas and she's using a standard def old fashioned telly and it didn't look anywhere near as good to me. She likes it though so that's what counts! I think it would look so much better if she had an LCD screen or something.

Skryrim has a lot to offer and it's no quick access arcade game, much more the opposite in fact. You'd be best placed to put the time aside for it as it's quite slow burn and the beginning can be frustrating as it can take ages just to start the story off (as I found with the Xbox and its awkward controls). Well, that was my experience as I'm not used to the control system and I've already played the start so there were no surprises for me.

Don't know what problems there are with the PS3 version. Mine is tied to my Steam account so gets updated automatically. It is a great game and a lot like Oblivion. Oblivion's graphics are more or less equal in many respects (at least on the PC). I preferred that game in many respects, actually. No dragons though... And no arrows in the knee! tongue

Apparently on the PS3 version when you get a certain amount of play time and the according saved data, it starts to jump and stutter to the point of being unplayable.

You tube has some terrible examples. Dire really.

Sounds a bit like when I played Oblivion and if you had too many saves (each save was 8 megs in size), it took ages to open crates/chests and things. I haven't seen any of that return in Skyrim but I understand. You have to be careful with Skyrim saves else your entire hard drive will be clogged up with gigabytes worth. I guess you could always archive your earlier saves on the PS3 and then just keep the latest couple after each game?

Re: Your Game of the Year 2011..? A New Contender ?

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Im just going to nominate a game that normally i would not play for love or money, been a few months since my last purchase so i thought i would do google search to see what the best game of 2011 on various gaming sites.

I new this game had got some outstanding scores and it looked pretty decent by the trailers,on metacritic the game is in the high 90s and on many gaming sites it scores incredibly high.

Only one game from a film that i care to remember has lived up to expectations at the time and that was goldeneye all those Nintendo 64 years ago.

Now after given this game a whirl there is a new contender for my game of the year..........and you aint going to believe it as its one of the last games that would normally interest me based on marvel comics and Recent films even though this title is not a film.

Thats game my friends is BATMAN ARKHAN CITY ..............And boy what a wonderful fantastic game this is turning out to be, pure class in its production values and graphics, superb voice acting and characters and a absolute joy to play.

Traded Saint Row The Third because that never met mine or most peoples expectations and it was kind of rubbish looking, and I'm so glad i took the plunge and bought this Batman game because its brilliant

I said 3 months ago that this game had none of my interest but along with Uncharted 3 This rules the roost and on metacritic Batman actually got the highest score.

If your on the fence and own either console and you want a quality game go out and don't hesitate buying this as its pure class and even though i loaded it late this evening i was totally sold and hooked and did not want to turn it of.

Normally cut scenes and story bore me to death but this game had me intrigued in the 2 hours i just spent playing it wink Quality

Heard a lot of good things about Batman Arkham City, reckon it's a deffo must purchase and soon.

The main developing studio is actually based not too far away from where I live, here in north London. All right, so it's up the road a tiny wee bit in a posh area. Highgate, in case you're interested. These guys seem to be on the up and up.

Did a lot of work in the refurbishment at Highgate school. Their wood pellet boiler system cost more than my house. And I had to spend all my dinner money on one cup of coffee down the high street.
It would be a great place to live if it wasn't for that stupid, elongated roundabout with a garage in the middle. In rush hour, fill up at your peril. You may never get out!

Back on subject, I might pick up Batman Arkham City too.

We are talking about the new game that actually came out 5 months ago,So i think i made a mistake as it City and not asylum .

There is no way you could pick this baby up for £3.75...........My mistake and if you think the first game asylum is suppose to be good then you aint seen nothing until you play City.

Actually i just read through my thread and i did say Arkham City and not Asylum ............Phew.

Be mighty late for me to talk about a game that far back ?

I played the first and in all honesty thought it was just ok,this is leaps and bounds way better.

Just spent 10 minutes or so checking out wood pellet boilers. I'd love something like that in my place, it's so frigging cold here atm. I would love to go around finding things to chuck on a wood burning thing in my home. Heheehe. grin

Sounds like you must be pretty handy. I am pretty incompetent to be fair. I have spent way too much time refitting a couple of aerial brackets to my chimney in an effort to see it stays up this time. And I wasn't even the one who put it up in the first place: had paid a load of money several years ago to CAI registered cowboys who did a terrible job. Needless to say the aerial didn't remain in place very long and water damage began to affect my upstairs neighbour's place. blush

Yeah, um, back to the topic at hand. I will get me a copy of BAC too, but I will wait till it falls below £25 in price at least. No need to hurry with Skyrim still entertaining me.

I thought the graphics looked bad on my sister's crt tv at 480p. The colour was totally out too, which didn't help things. It looks a lot nice on my - yes you guessed it - PC!

Graphically, it isn't much of a step up from Oblivion really. I don't feel I'm losing out though as this time, with my relatively decent rig, it runs buttery smooth (unlike when Oblivion came out).

As for patience - I probably have a fair amount more than you but where we are totally on the same page is real time strategy and things like that, which demand a different approach (like reading manuals and things). I just want a game to be (more or less) immediately fun.

Being familiar with Oblivion, once you've learned the importance of the stats screens then it's child play. Actually, Skyrim is incredibly dumbed down since Oblivion and not in a good way (as far as I'm concerned).

Well, better be off... smile

1. Gears of war 3
2. Skyrim
3. Forza 4

And the best arcade game I've played in the last few years is Worms Armageddon 2. It doesn't have a large online community but is great fun if you have a few people on your friends list that have it.

Thanks for the welcome.

Worms 2 does support voice chat on live not to sure if it does on PSN as im an xbox man myself.

Forts is a great game mode if you have three other mates playing it with you as its very tactical. Crazy crates is fast and furious and is always a laugh.

What's the online community like on BC3?. I'm getting a bit fed up with the level of abuse im getting on gears 3 at the moment by 12 year old kids that think I have a mod or use a lag switch.

Well Jaxx i got bored with that pretty quick also so its each to there own.

I am totally addicted to Horde mode and i think its far better than Nazi Zombies, one thing i have never come to grips with in that nazi Zombies is the way the guns seem to react and they feel nothing like the game in question Black Ops.

Why do they not have the same impact as the game and why do they feel like underpowered weapons that don't shoot correctly.

I mean when you shoot the pistol it takes about 15 shots and the guns just feel really weird ?

That's because each wave the zombies become harder, so on wave 1 they take 1 stab to kill, on wave 2 they take 2 stabs etc. similar to Horde where wave 11 is the same as wave 1 but just harder.

On wave 1 you can kill a zombie with a pistol headshot easily, but by wave 10 you have absolutely no chance, it's just to increase the difficulty. The only thing I don't like about Horde is it's too limited, the levels are quite small and you just stand there with a turret and shoot for waves and waves whereas with Zombies the levels are huge so you can be constantly moving around, picking up perks etc. It probably doesn't help that I am more of a fan of COD than Gears anyway, I do like Gears I just prefer FPS to over the shoulder.

They ruined zombies with Easter eggs and nonsense. Remember the first one with literally just two rooms? Verruckt was my favourite. Once you had everything open, you could run for your life (in circles) whilst lobbing grenades behind you!

We always said the ultimate would be to be able to get outside. They let you outside and then ruin it with things to do. All I wanted to do was slay zombies!

Yup totally agree mate, the first ones were the best. My favourite was Der Riese, that one was brilliant! They did ruin it when they started to add the easter eggs, I liked the back story, but not doing 15 steps just to hear some ghost girl talk or whatever! Lol
