PSN slow or virgin media routed issues

[link to this post]

Hi all.
I bought a PS3 about 2 months ago and i downloaded a demo fifa 13 demo from PS store, However im getting real terrible download speed.
It taken 71 minutes to download a 1.5GB fifa 13 demo. No one was on the network just me and my PS3 LAN light was flashing away so im asking is it me or is it virgin media routing issues, I had the same problem with OVH systems but that wasn't just me it was a high ping from my mates house aswell and hes on virgin media cable too, However my dads on O2 and hes ping was about 10, 12,11,9 so is virgin themselves but i found this website what explains it all http://p19.smokeping.ovh.net/ovh-server-statistics/s...

My speedtest shows 91.2Mbits download and 4.97Mbits upload and this is normal during the day but at night say 1am i get my full speeds. Last night about 1am i was downloading the fifa 13 demo game

So is this happening on all ISPs even on a LAN connection?

Ha ha. Liking the extreme sarcasm. laugh

But what about you T2D, you've got a PS3 and an internet connection. What kind of speeds do you get when you download PS3 demos? That would be an even more helpful reply to Swanny's, which at least did kinda mention his own experience.

Myself, I would not go near Virgin for all their traffic shaping and throttling. I expect even if I had 100meg down I still couldn't watch stuff on the iPlayer without it pausing to buffer every 5 seconds. My old neighbour's connection was shi.... Well, I won't go there. grin

So, the question is - is it normal to have a super stable, super fast connection and still receive slow download speeds from the PSN? Or is it just Virgin? I don't know as I don't have a PS3. And, though it's tempting to blame Virgin I expect the truth of the matter is Sony manage their bandwidth and serveer load in such a way to slow their users down lots. One way to prove/disprove that assumption would be to see if there was a difference downloading off peak in the dead of night but I think the OP's already done that. Or ask about? As he is doing. I'm a genius. And a boring git. I like writing unnecessarily long winded stuff just for Time2die as I know how much he loves to read my stimulatingly long posts to help him sleep at night. tongue

I doubt it's the PSN.

My FTTC maximum is close to 4.5MB (38Mbps ish) and is achievable on iTunes etc. I have never managed more than 1.5-2MB on the PSN but it never seems to drop below that, so I'm guessing that it is limited to around 16Mbps. That's more than adequate for the purpose though.

That said, the OP's reported speed is ridiculous and he should speak to Virgin about what settings are applied, as I had a friend on 10Mbps Virgin and he always downloaded at that speed. smile

Actually i can download a lot faster from the 360 service than the Playstation network,i use a set of Homeplugs and at a guess a 1gig download would take about 20 minutes on the 360 and 20 days on the playstation network tongue.

When i do a connection test on the playstation it says my download speed is around 12 meg but its nowhere near as fast as 360 ,then you got the install procedure once downloaded and thats a chore .

Thanks Spook for making a return to the forums its nice to have another console gamers opinion tongue NOT.

Anyway Spook Dishonoured in a few weeks which is looking well nice, been playing Borderlands 2 but I'm kind of getting fed up with it already.

Unlike you T2D I don't feel the need to sprout out a load of nonsense when just a few words will suffice tongue

I let him know he is not alone and as far as I know (having a few friends in the same situation) it's like that for most people.
I'm on wi-fi so I imagine that doesn't help.

Just kiddin'. wink

Yeah, well I think Mr Nels answered the dude's question. Most sensible answer here.

Yeah, Dishonoured does look good mate. I might even get it sooner rather than later like I normally do. Still need to sort my PC out. Shocking innit?

I daydreamed about having a console earlier this evening actually. Thought how cool it would look on my nice 50inch telly to play a driving game. That would be mad really. Maybe I should try and pick something up cheap? How's about sending all your old games down to El Spook? You can start with Borderlands 2 and then we'll wait till you've had Dishonoured a week or 2... grin

I received the latest Gran Turismo for Crimbo last year. It spent 30 mins in the machine and I haven't touched it since! No patience to work through it like I used to. Need for Speed type pick up and play is more my bag nowadays and even then the demo does me just fine.

If you should pick up a PS3 (though the timescale could be rather drawn out if your computer desk saga is anything to go by! wink) you can have Gran Tourismo if you want it. I'll never get round to playing it Spook.

If on the other hand you pick up a 360, you can go [censored] yourself! (/cowers in corner awaiting fanboi retaliatory attack)

I must be a spotty little 13 year old then........wink

Actually Swanny everyone knows that the platform of choice regarding Multi Platform Games and online is a 360,time and time again over the past 5 or 6 years the Playstation always gets the inferior Port and this is a continuing trend.

Just ask anyone that has played any ported Bethesda Games and a certain MW2 and to many others to many to mention, you are not really in a position to comment being that you don't have one so you can not really compare.

Since i have both and as you know i buy a awful lot of games i can tell you from facts that indeed the 360 wins hands down when it comes to ports and online play.

Your not on your own as my mate has a playstation 3 and he does not like the online subscription which is required for a 360.

Problem is that since its a free online service then you can not expect that much in times of grief, unlike when you pay for xbox live there is generally uproar if things don't run smoothy.

Don't get me wrong i was also in the Playstation 3 supporters club but i have been constantly let down by Sony over the years and have now turned my attention to games on the 360 because of what i just mentioned in the previous post.

The only time i buy a game lately for the Playstation is if its console exclusive and that is becoming a rare event.

Yeah, Gran Turismo 2 used to be a favourite of mine back in the day. Thanks for the offer mate. If I ever get round to buying a PS3 you'll be the first to know! tongue

My um, desk research progressed a step today actually. I had a look in Ryman's today. Decided they were over priced and not too great quality wise. If I was good at DIY (and less lazy) I'd use the bits of wood I've got and make a bracket to stick this table top thing I've got up on a wall someplace.

The PS4 and 720 are looking likely to launch by end of 2013 they reckon so my holding off is probably a good thing. Reckon they will be super duper monsters and a really good deal whatever they cost compared to high end PCs like last time maybe. My old comp is getting a bit long in the tooth and the old man, t2d says, it's so much nicer to sit in the living room on the sofa when you're playing games. Well, don't hold your breath guys!

Wireless.

It may be down to router settings or ISP traffic policy? I dont know, but I had the hump it wouldnt go to 4 MBps (38mbps ish) when iTunes will!

I do have an issue at the moment that it is taking 10 mins to sync trophy information, but I have never had the patience to let it keep trying and it is possible my replacement PS3 slim is the reason for that.

I would advise talking to your ISP or looking at your router settings, but I wouldn't be any help on that score, sorry. frown
