Interesting..Think Broadband Make The Gaming News.

[link to this post]

ThinkBroadband

Sort of touches on my Killzone Shadowfall Post yesterday really and the fact that Game as a digitally downloaded title is 50gig in size.

Thank God i have Fibre and i dont tend to download games of this size anyway as i would rather have a physical retail copy so i can trade it when i have finished or it turns out not how i expected.

Once you start the Digital download route your stuck with it forever, besides that there is another flaw with this system which i have spoken about before, how can a digital downloaded game cost up to £10 or £20 more than a retail copy, and this is not unusual because i see this time and time again on the playstation store.

It all comes down to what the publisher wants to sale the game for, anything new or pre-orders will be expensive online as they want maxium profit.

Games and accessories are where sony and mircosoft make the profit on their consoles, discs will eventually die out as digital is the future, the only thing holding it back is peoples internet connections at home.

Quicker and cheaper to get on your bike and pick up a copy from the local shop.
Might mean some pie eaters get some exercise too laugh

Totally agree ,but they are going to have to release consoles/hardware with more capacity hard drives than the 500 Gig both the Playstation 4 and Xbox one ship with.

Sonys you can change to a bigger drive, xbox one you can not.

I think you have gotten confused between a SSD and a hybrid SSHD as crucial sell a 940GB SSD for £440 and you can get a 1TB hybrid HDD for under a £100.

50 GB is huge and games are only going to get bigger. I currently have a 6.4 Mbps connection so that would take quite a while to download. With the way things are going it shows how badly the UK needs Fibre broadband available everywhere. Luckily it looks like I will be able to get it in my area in Spring 2015 (thanks to the Welsh government smile )

On the price side digital copies should be cheaper than physical, maybe they are under pressure from large retailers to keep them higher.

Actually its 0.2 OR 20% of a PS4 Toadmeister. And when rounded upward and expressed in percentage terms, technically it should be 0.23 or 23% at an asking price of £349, but what's 3% amongst friends?

Now where's my red pen... wink

Forgot he was talking Hybrid SSD and not the real thing which would have cost around £1000 for the same amount of space.

Nice to see that you are on the ball.

However, a "PS4 Toadmeister" doesn't actually exist - I think you meant "PS4, Toadmeister."

I'll get my red pen too... smile

Yes, full SSD are priced rather too high for what little you get - a hybrid is a good compromise.

So explain exactly what a Hybrid SSD is and why it's cheaper than the really dear SSD I see at places like crucial memory and various other PC websites.....Why is it so expensive, think the one I saw for my IMac on the crucial site was only 120gig and cost £400,I've already got a terabyte in this unit and 120 is far to little....500 minimum for me and I would not be happy with that.

Since your in the know regarding PC ,I have 4 slots for memory in my IMac and at present I have 2 slots taken up with 2 times 2 gig in the slots....got 16 gig on the way 2 times 8 gig ,so can I just add it to the remaining slots and have 20 gig total or do I have to do away with the 2 times 2 and stick with the new 16 gig configuration ....it may seem like a daft question but I thought I would ask, answer is probably on crucial website configuration .wink

Just had a quick look on OCUK and you can get a 120 GB SSD for £73.99, 256 GB for £125.99. What I would do is have a SSD for my OS and applications then have a second standard disk drive for large media files and backup.

Hybrid SSD hard drives are standard hard drives with some SSD cache memory (in addition to the usual hard drive cache). As there is a lot less SSD memory (because it's expensive), prices are cheaper.

You don't get the total speed of SSD hard drives, but it should work out a fair bit faster than a hard drive without SSD.

You might find this interesting.

Since your in the know regarding PC ,I have 4 slots for memory in my IMac and at present I have 2 slots taken up with 2 times 2 gig in the slots....got 16 gig on the way 2 times 8 gig ,so can I just add it to the remaining slots and have 20 gig total or do I have to do away with the 2 times 2 and stick with the new 16 gig configuration ....it may seem like a daft question but I thought I would ask, answer is probably on crucial website configuration .

Unless you are using a 27-inch iMac, the maximum amount of memory seen seems to be 16Gb, so putting in 20Gb would be a waste.

The other thing is its always better not to mix memory - whilst it should be no actual problem, the computer will only work to the slowest memory speed...

So, the best idea would be to just use the 16Gb (and flog the other memory on eBay for a bit of extra cash).

Those proper SSD prices or hybrid because 120 gig SSD drives on Crucial websites are near £400 and i can not see a website been that much cheaper than the majority.

Plenty of 256GB SSDs for under £200.

Built a PC a while back with 2 x 128GB SSD in raid stripe (you know, just to get a bit more performance), a 500GB hybrid drive for main storage plus a 1TB standard HD to store some VMs on for testing. Lots of storage and VERY fast boot.

SSDs are no different to any other hard drive to install. A few screws (unless you have a screwless case), 2 cables and then if it is the main drive install the OS.

So how do i go about that with a 27inch iMac and besides the SSD drive what else do i require and how do i get the operating system onto this new hard drive once i have taken out whats already in it.

Sounds straight forward to you who is obviously technical but for someone that is not one for changing even basic parts then its a little bit more complicated.

Ah sorry, forgot it was an IMAC. Don't own an IMAC but as it is an "all in one" it may well be more difficult.

After years of experience if you have to do anything like this http://gigaom.com/2010/05/17/how-to-replace-your-ima... even I would be inclined not to bother. That is the reason I hate all in ones.

Yeah i will leave it as it is and trade this in or sell it in a few years when they will already be pre/installed with SSD drives.wink

As soon as i saw him with the suckers trying to take the Glass out in the first picture that was enough for me blush.

Today or tomorrow depending when it arrives i plan to install 16 gig of ram in this iMac .thats basically 3 screws and some pulley straps and then slotting in the replacement Ram....Watch me even get this basic thing wrong crazy

Hopefully the RAM should be easy enough - just make sure the notch in the RAM lines up with the little bit of plastic on the board - not much should go wrong. Oh, you might want to earth yourself before starting to touch the RAM (touching a ground radiator can do the trick for that).

And I would be put off with the HD at the same point as you - anything where you need those glass suckers to pull the front of a computer off definitely doesn't seem "user upgradable". I've built my fair share of PCs over the years but that design is a little frightening.

Thanks for that advice Ian will come in handy,i have watched the Crucial install of ram videos and he mentioned the Earth thing or holding the Imac with your hand as you do it.

Like you say should not be to difficult but i seem to make the most simple tasks Major blush

Thats why i steer well clear of the idea of building stuff myself and upgrading PC graphic cards and alike, got no patience whatsoever and even step by step videos on Youtube sometimes confuse me even more.blush

Anyway Ram just turned up..Easy Peasy Operation took 2 mins...sorted smile

Yeah holding part of the case (metal) will earth you if its plugged in but obviously turned off laugh

On the subject of MACs I would be tempted to go for a MAC mini in the future when I feel the need to upgrade, one of the few Apple products that actually seems good value.

Don't know IMACs well but how much of the case is plastic and how isolated is the power if it is plugged in? I know it in PCs but not sure how open "live" parts of the system are on an IMAC.

All of the imac casing is a silver alloy, can not tell you about the insides as i have only ever exposed the Ram access this afternoon which was pretty easy even by my standards.
