Consoles, what alternative controllers?

Probably getting a game console, XBOX or Playstation, second-hand.

Appreciate some tech advice.

Most likely games are shootem-ups and driving, no online usage.

The question is, what other controllers can plug into them?

Do wheel/pedal units and joysticks have to be dedicated to a console type or can any usb example just plug in?

Are the consoles backwards compatible, like playing games for earlier models?

The original PS3 model (the fat one) is backward compatible but the slim and super slim are not.

Not sure about the controllers but I would think they would have to be ones made for the console.

all ps3 consoles can play any ps1/ps2 game on psn.

fat ps3 consoles can play ps1/ps2 physical copies.

slim ps3 consoles can play ps1 physical copies but not ps2 physical copies.

Interesting...that would be a nice feature.
