Was thinking ? How long have I been into Gaming

[link to this post]

So I'm trying to get around how long my passion for gaming is in years,as far as I can remember my very first gaming device was a Spectrum 128k and the games were on cassette tapes and when loading had a rainbow effect on the Television and a load of flashing lines.

Anybody that walked past the unit if it was on the carpet it frequently crashed,I'm not sure exactly when but I'm guessing late 70s .

Traded Destiny this morning and a lot of other disappointing games, actually picked up Hyrule Warriors on the Nintendo Wii U.....Don't laugh it's a bit of light relief and escapism and a bit of fun.

Myself and a friend an Mrnelster teamed up for a session of The last of us last night, have to admit I was dam aweful and Nelly who has only played it a few times faired much better.

Game is so Dam addictive but so so frustrating when your useless and try and play all Gung Ho or pray and spray mechanics, this game is so focussed on team play but I'm just not getting it across.

Give Nelly credit he tried to be a team player but unfortunate my other mate got segregated from us that often it hardly qualifys as a team effort.

That's a long time, I applaud your dedication to the hobby! I will definitely be a gamer for life and I hope that one day when I have kids that I can enjoy gaming with them too.

My earliest memory was my Sega Mega Drive, I never had a NES or SNES but my cousin and best friend did and i used to play at their houses. I absolutely loved the Mega Drive though, many happy memories on that laugh I also had an Atari and a shoebox full of games haha.

I think the console I probably spent the most time on was the N64, soooo many good games. Zelda Ocarina of Time is still one of my favourite games of all time.

My earliest gaming was an Atari games console using cartridges.

That was followed with a Vic-20, Acorn Electron then moved into the PC world with an Amstrad 1640 and various other PCs since. Occasionally dipped into console gaming but to date not for long. Just got an XBone which hopefully will keep me going longer - finding the control easier than I remember from previous attempts on consoles (lifelong keyboard/joystick/mouse user - seldom used controllers).

It makes me very sad the fact that I haven't actually switched my Xbox One on for about 2 months,I bought it for Titanfall which I quickly got tired of,every other multi platform game bought since has been for my Playstation 4 based on the fact it seems to have the better version which is kind of surprising given that in the days of the 360v P3 Microsoft device owned and had all the best versions.

How the mighty have fallen from grace which I have said over and over again ,a complete Microsoft PR disaster from the moment they introduced us to the Xbox One and Kinnect ,a device that nobody gives a [censored] about and still today 12 months later doesn't have one decent game for it.

Now finally they have realised that nobody cares about Kinnect and have consoles priced similar to the Playstation 4 without the giant Paperwait.

Game releases for the next gen consoles this year have been really poor in general, and Xbox One could do with a killer exclusive ,sadly that game Quantum Break has slipped into 2015 and I can not see my buying anything for the Xbox One this year.

Now I'm not a fanboy of the Playstation 4 but when you have both devices you have a choice ,and if games look and run better on a particular console then you buy it for that.
I appreciate they might be minimal on the eye but if there is a choice then you make the better call.

Goldeneye and Star Fox 64 were amazing games. Also the Star Wars one on the N64 was good too, and Perfect Dark! Same Majoras Mask wasn't as good as Ocarina really.

XB1 and PS4 have not released any killer games between them, both sit on equal par at the moment. XB1 sales are picking up pace now they are offering a Kinect free alternative. Next year will set the two consoles apart when we get more exclusive games released. I think both have had equally disappointing starts to the "Next Gen" campaign.

XB1 was unpopular at the start of the year, but more and more people are getting them and forgiving the original issues now that improvements have been made to the commercials and the features on the Xbox itself.

The Nintendo Wii U is sadly missing a quality zelda game, for the life of me i can not understand how these companies that produce Gaming Consoles release new hardware without there greatest game franchises.

Another Metroid like Metroid Prime on the gamecube from Retro would also be hugely welcomed wink

I did spend a fair few weeks playing Windwaker which was bundled as a free download with my Nintendo Wii U.

The last of us is a Must have killer game for the playstation 4 and so in some respect is Killzone Shadowfall and Infamous Second son.

Im not rocking your boat here Jaxxy but if your totally honest with yourself and look at it from a Gamers prospective then you know in your heart that at present the Playstation 4 has the better software and as for sales Microsoft are when i last looked 5 Million of the sales of the Playstation 4.

My point been that Microsoft literally ruled with the 360 it was a console made with gamers in mind,i bought everything on that system,it had one of my favourite online modes of all time in Gear 3 and Horde Mode and for some stupid utter set of lunatics in charge handed it back to Sony who were flagging well behind and struggling.

Microsoft tried to sell gamers a Multimedia device, with multimedia functions that we already had like Sky Tv been streamed through the system.

They lost what made the 360 so successfulA games Division with Killer games and the better Multi platform games to boot.

I know your a loyal xbox supporter Jaxx but look at the bigger picture,i have already praised Microsoft for there 360 console ,work ,games and far superior online serviceMy Question was there vision..What exactly were they seeing and why did they not take notice of Gamers opinions on there Original Xbox Reveal, eventually yes they listened but for 6 months they were so so Stubborn and its cost them dearly.

I went for the XBone for 2 reasons.

1) My remote control works with it for DVD/Bluray. Didn't want to use a game controller to control the bluray side and I don't want a separate bluray player

2) The XBone had a good deal going from game with destiny, halo MCC and COD Ghosts.

I did consider the PS4 but it was the bluray remote control that swung it. Never know, if I get properly used to the controllers I might end up with both like you...

The Wii-U is the least likely one for me. Had a Wii for a while and hardly used it - better for group play than single play and most of the stuff that was "different" was a bit too cartoony.

Same for me Ian but it's the gamer in me I can not resist a new gadget/ console, besides I love Zelda and it came with Wind Waker .....wink

My Nintendo Wii was a giant white paperwaite and like you the gimmick quickly faded and collected more dust than our Dyson vacuumed cleaner mad.

Motion controlled gaming will never catch on,and once they do away with all this Playstation Eye and Kinnect Garbage the better.....

Concentrate on killer games and new IPs ,even developers are not interested in Kinnect.

Killzone wasn't all it was cracked up to be, I played it and it was ok but not amazing. Don't get me wrong some parts of it looked beautiful, but it just wasn't the best game. I have played The Last of Us on PS3 and I didn't like it that much, plus you can't really count that as a new game for PS4 as it doesnt look that much different. Infamous though I will give you that, looks like a class game and I haven't played it.

I am a big Xbox fan but I also look at it with an unbiased view, both of them have done nothing killer yet. Next year will hopefully be the breakthrough year for both of them. Titanfall was a good game, just a shame it was so short and not a lot of content.

Also, that link is to "PS Extreme" so of course it's going to be full of PS fanboys hehe wink

I can find unbiased ones if you like smile.

It's common knowledge that the playstation leads the bone 2/1 ,but on a serious note pkaystation 4 has better games no doubt about it......but mind blowing they ain't ,that I will agree on.

Personally I think this will be the last generation consoles I will buy,my patience is wearing thin and very few games get me excited and personally I think that we in some cases are going backward and not forward ....

Think I'm going to spend about £150 and get myself a killer Gaming PC Rig twice as powerful as Toady's wink

I started off with a C64, and was more interested in that than school naturally.

Games were also on tape, but much latter I got two 1541 disk drives (mainly for my programming), which are here, I also wrote several other programs including a music creating program (with an interrupt driven playing system), a quick program and a shoot-em-up. Unfortunately I no longer have the code (or the programs for these). I did sell one copy of my music program though, which was nice.

I then moved onto the Amiga 600, and got BlitzBasic. That was really buggy and disliked it - I do wish I had brought AMOS instead.

When I heard Commodore was going bust, I quickly sold those and brought my favourite machine : An Archimides A3010, and of course, commenced programming for that, producing many fine programs for it (mostly in BASIC as that was generally as fast as ARM assembler). I wrote a fair bit of stuff, being at University - A sequel to a C64 game, map editor, code generator as so forth. Later on, I upgraded to a RiscPC with a hard drive - yey!

But then, Acorn folded, so I sold by RiscPC and brought a Gateway PC, progressing to a Mesh desktop, several laptops (before they were stolen), and doing a fair bit of programming with Borland C, DarkBasic, DarkBasic Professional.

I still have the page where one of my games was reviewed smile I also got a bit of money from an Acorn magazine for a doubly-linked list ARM module I submitted. It took them over a month or so to realise I needed payment, but I did get a fair bit out of them...

Then I got (several) iMacs, which I kept for a year or so (one was damaged after thunderstorms) and the rest were sold, mainly becase OSX 10.6 was so initially buggy...

Then I moved back to PC's and brought BlitzMax (its okay - have to new every structure before you can use it gets a bit ...annoying), GLBasic (my most used programming system - have done various things with it for Android, Linux and webOS). Unfortunately, for the past year or so, the authors presence as been a bit... lacking.

I also have PureBasic (used it for calculating statistical analysis when I was working), and Monkey X (which, like BlitzMax, can be very... annoying).

All through this time, I've been busy gaming - Lotus II on the A3010, Doom 2 on the PC, Commando and Mayhem in Monsterland on the C64. Starfighter on the A3010 was great fun too. Desert and Nuclear Strike on the Amiga. Ah memories...

I did have a Playstation 1 at some point, along with a N64 (and Goldeneye). We also had a XBox a fair few years ago, but with the pervasive appearance of PC games, they were soon gone.

I also had a Raspberry Pi (with RISCOS 5), but unfortunately it suffered from keyboard input problems, so it didn't last long.

I do regret not being able to get a C128, 1581 3.5" disk drive and an Atari Falcon, all of which were difficult to get hold of.

I started with a Spectrum 48k which I had to use a seperate cassette player, I remember it had to be set to a certain volume for the games to load (transformers game was amazing), I then moved onto an Amiga 500+ with the Captain Planet game lol.
One of my favs was a 486 PC when you had to type in lines of code to make some games work (Xwing vs Tie Fighter was amazing).
I've also had a Snes, Megadrive, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gameboy, Neo Geo, Saturn, Probably a few others as well.
I remember when I had my spectrum a mate had an Amstrad which was slightly more powerful but his monitor was all green.

Ok here's my history

A cartridge console with a great motorbike jump over buses game. Well it seemed great when I was a boy

Sinclair ZX81
Commodore 64
Atari 520ST
Nes
Super Nintendo
Sega Megadrive
Nintendo 64
Nintendo Gamecube
Nintendo Wii
Playstation 1
Gameboy

I still have these

My old PC gaming rig

Although I've owned all the above I've done most of my gaming on PC's. I still consider consoles to be a bit of a compromise

Well the first gaming machine I had as far as I can remember was the NES, remember the games being extremely annoying. Things are much better these days lol. Also had a master system, PS1, PC, PS3.

Also acquired a Dragon computer and Atari ST at some point but never did much with them, not even sure if they worked properly.

PC was my platform during my main gaming years.

My first experience of gaming I think was on a friend's atari, playing some tank games (which were huge blocky pixels) and a platformer with pit in the name.
Later I remember playing on friend's sprectum zx's and commodore 64's, my sister was given a amstrad 64 with a green monitor as a present but she never used it, was mainly me.
Later after that was the amiga 500, again using my friend's when round his house, and later the amiga 1200/600, this time I asked for an amiga as a present, my dad did actually order one but commodore went bankrupt, it did turn up about a year late but he proceeded to sell it. He eventually brought my other sister an amiga 600, my sister was moaning why my dad brought it for her when it was me who wanted one (yes my parents were like that), it was mostly in my roombut I kept been told of for using it and had to put it back frown
Eventually I was then brought a master system, and not long after that a super nintendo. Super nintendo I felt was a quality console, got it with super mario world, and loved super mario kart on it (which in my opinion the snes version beats all the newer versions), zelda and more.
My dad a few years after when I was 16 finally got me a computer which was my first pc. Right when pc's were taking off, wasa year or 2 after doom came out and was when dune 2 was new and the first command and conquer as well. I was really into RTS games then playing with friends at lan parties. Eventually played starcraft when we worn out command and conquer. Over the years I upgraded pc's and played snes and amiga games on my pc's via emulators, .as well as pc games. I did at one point buy a dreamcast but barely got into it and sold it. So effectively I was out of console gaming between the snes all the way up to the xbox360 generation, my next proper console after the snes was the 360. So I missed the golden ps1 and ps2 era which I am told was a jrpg heaven era. After exhausting the 360 of games I got a ps3 to play ps3 exclusives and remade games which were enhanced on the ps3 versions. I also as a kid remember playing on the gameboy;, I used to play on gameboy's in shop displays as well.
I can see myself getting a ps4, thanks to square enix, ff15 and ff type 0, 2 confirmed games for it, also I think the next kingdom hearts game as well. But this wont be until 2015 and hopefully by then it be around £250 to buy.

COD Zombies was amazing, I stopped really playing the VS mode of COD after COD WAW (have BF4 for that) but I used to buy the expansion packs on Black Ops etc just for the Zombie maps alone, Now that there are 3 companys working on COD It's annoying that we will have to wait another year for zombies as I really can't see them stopping that as it was a massive success.
