Crimbo

[link to this post]

Merry Christmas to all of you losers.

Hopefully, Trance, Jaxx, Mr Saffron and Chrys found a sleek black parallelo thingy at the end of the bed, with a copy of Drive Club sellotaped to it. Wouldn't it be lovely if a waiting list were required for places at oooosh racing in the new year?

I won't hold me breath.....

Need Sony to get the PSN sorted first, Apparently lizard squad did DDOS attacks to both Xbox live and PSN,

PSN still down for a mate of mine (and has been for over 24hrs), PSNDown is trending on twitter as well so I'm guessing it's still down or is for a lot of people anyway.
The other consoles side appears to be fine though when I heard about the attacks and went on to check if it was working.

I've read the attack targeted downstream servers, not the PSN directly. That could mean ISP's and explains why some people can connect and not others.

Interesting if that's the case, Unfort for one of the people I know (other one not had the chance to try) he still cannot sign into the PSN, On the plus side he came round here with 3 bottles of spirits so a merry time was had here.

sony need to get on top of it, whilst DDOS attacks are a nuisance a company of that size should be able to handle it, banks etc. also have to deal with such attacks.

Plus I know the mindset of these DDOS kiddies, when they successful it makes them motivated to carry on, they only give up when they realise they failing.

Agreed - Sony have had long enough to sort these problems out, whatever money they have in the bank, time to spend some getting a crack team of security experts in to try and plug some of the holes they have. DDoS is one thing, information leaks are another matter entirely. Either way, they've had long enough to try and stop this.

I think DDOS is completely different. I don't disagree they need top notch security advice on tap, or that their UI is currently overly glitchy.

But I read yesterday that MS has forty something million users and Sony 110 million. Now take into account the massive redundancy in terms of server capacity that MS has as a whole with it's business interest in Azure, then it is likely far easier for them to recover from such attacks. We all need to be patient and have a good old game of christmas monopoly instead. frown

But overall, they need to up their game with regard to the functionality of their UI, no question about that.

That is not for him to decide or impose on people. You wouldn't be very happy if they instead decided that people "just shouldn't be using the internet at all on Christmas day" and DDoSed your ISP, taking it down for the entire day, would you?

No I wouldn't be that impressed but I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Trouble is most parents these days don't have the strength to limit their child's play time. So the fact it was imposed on them was maybe a good thing, but probably the child just sulked all day instead.

The PSN gets really bad press because of it's size, but you're as at much risk with a myriad of other services and that's been proven.

They made themselves a nerd target, simple as that.

Well blame the goodie goodie boys that have ruined the country, tell you now we should have progressed as the years roll by but it's got worse..

Even the thought that a child can report his parents for over discipline procedure makes my skin crawl, tell you now if I had kids they could shove that were the sun don't shine and they would get a good hiding if they back chatted me or any other older person.

Sometimes when I'm out and about I just cringe when I see the future teenagers and there arrogant ways and total lack of care and consideration for anyone......

PSN back online

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

The PSN came back on after midnight it seems.

Been reading a bit more on DDoS attacks and it seems Sony already use the best people money can buy. When you read how much bandwidth these guys can provide for re routing, it can only be the size of the PSN (twice as big as Xbox live in terms of possible subscriber throughput) that causes the delay.

Anyhow, The Tiny Lizard Pen*s Squad have promised never to attack PSN or XBOX Live ever again. How very decent of them.....

Re: PSN back online

[re: mrnelster] [link to this post]

Remember though that the numbers quoted are the numbers of usernames made up and not of unique users, When PSN was free a lot of people (read kids playing COD and cheating) made multiple accounts for when the username/gamertag got banned and used another account. I read somewhere that the actual number of unique subscribers is actually a lot closer.

Apparently PSN was properly hacked and in the PSN store Destiny was made free (not the trial) as well (pics of it were online) and that was the reason late last night that when PSN got it back it came up as maintainance etc, Not sure how true it is but there is deffo pics about of it with it free and everyone was talking about it online yesterday and on streams etc, Although obviously it doesn't take much to start a rumour and it taking off online now so it maybe fake.

Either way it's a kick up the [censored] of all the companys that they need to improve a lot (especially Sony IMO).
Would be nice if they actually give something away as a gesture of goodwill for the downtime even if it's just adding the days down onto peoples sub.

There's been a lot of fake hack stories around, including the Daily Mail Online which soon got taken down. The scramble for the headline overrides the facts. frown

I would say it highly improbable because hacking a DDoSed service is likely almost impossible. If your method of preventing external access is by flooding servers indiscriminately, how do you then get in to hack it? I would assume they only usually get in by exploiting weaknesses in the front end?

I even managed to keep up with Kila a couple of times last night (i.e. got across the line with him still vaguely visible in the distance!) and Swanny's now back in the swing and pushing for the front too.
