They are pants.

Anything you get used to feels natural eventually, but if you and I should ever be called upon to take down the Russians in a stolen T-95 (before they reach Norwich city centre), I'm driving. There simply won't be enough time to hacksaw the top off of one of the steering levers.

Unless of course modern tanks are keyboard and mouse controlled, in which case you're on your own mate!
