PlayStation 4 will get new firmware next week that will add HDR compatibility to all current systems.
The firmware is likely version 4.00 which is currently in beta, however it's a big surprise that HDR will be part of this firmware.
The firmware update makes all PlayStation 4 models HDR-compatible. The PS4 Slim will arrive on September 15 and PS4 Pro on November 10. Only Pro will be able to output games in 4K, however it's good to see that all current PS4's will support HDR.

Nothing to get excited about then, just a pain in the bum waiting for it to upgrade itself

It is good that they are upgrading the existing PS4 rather than keeping it just for the PS4 Pro but it is only any use to people with 4k displays that have the HDR feature. Which won't be me any time soon.

Just checked and my tv is HDR so thats good I think
But what does it actually mean? Will it make the actual PS4 games look any better?

I do intend to get the pro dependent of stocks as I'll probably have to wait a week after release but what would be cool with the hdr update is if they patch some of the smaller titles to support 4k?

Here we are...sounds good if you have a display to support it.
WHAT IS HDR?
In a nutshell, its the ability to display a wider and richer range of colours, much brighter whites, and much deeper, darker blacks. This gives the TV picture a more dynamic look, which is where the name comes from.
HDR content preserves details in the darkest and brightest areas of a picture that are lost using current standards. It also allows for more natural, true-to-life colours that are closer to how we see them in real life.

Yeah I get that part of it but what the PS4 really do for HDR?
Not the least interested, I'll wait for the PS5 or xbox2, not swallowing this marketing nonsense from either.

So i have had a Sony 4k tv for ages and now they are talking about HDR which is suppose to be better than 4K,i mean 4K tv have yet to take of and they on about even better resolutions in the next generation of televisions.
I don't even think i have played or adjusted the Gaming Sections in the Sony Menu.

So you pre/ordered then
Think it's just a feature some 4K TV's have isn't it? not the next gen of TV.

Don't know mate me and the Girlfriend are very early adopters of new technology and apart from looking in Currys at the various new models and talking to the dumb staff that literally know nothing i do my own research online then choose whats best for me,normally use the AV forums for gadgets and reviews of most whats out on the market ?

any tv with a 8/10 bit panel should support it. Consoles currently use 6 bit colour depths.

But what does it actually mean? Will it make the actual PS4 games look any better? Yes is the short answer, but as with the Xbone, you have to make sure it is the right format for your TV set. Xbone also only supports one type.
Basically kila (as I understand it) it's mainly about the blacks. The colour range is so wide, that when you have darkness in the scene you can still see all of the detail. It is very impressive when viewed side by side.
This link to DF that I posted in the other thread discusses how it actually looks on selected ps4 games.

If you have a Sony set, I suspect your Xbone will get even less use going forward, if you buy a Neo that is.
Format Wars
I'm going to keep calling it Neo because it's much easier to type.

Yeah we have a 55inch Sony Bravia X9.

I have a Samsung set.

But Cracked Glass Looks like a Mobile phone with a Smashed Screen App.

Yep, piggy bank accounts the gaming one, is awash with dosh, just have to decide which console looks like they want to continue supporting physical software, it's not looking like Sony
And believe me you haven't heard the last of Sony and the console wars, expect another surprise right around the launch of the Scorpio.
Hardware you mean as in new consoles
No suppose not, some Sony man states they are going after the PC gamer market, alrighty.... I have PS4, until that 4 changes to another number, it's Sony Playstation 4, no matter what they try and market.
Could it be we may be having some sort of console PC sitting on our Tv Stands in the future,i mean why don't they just release a console that you can easily upgrade with parts in the future,i mean if you bought a Playstation 4 and now you are going to buy the Pro version, thats £700 right,so why not just build something better with more grunt in the first place and charge more than the standard £349.
Steambox...any takers?
Dont here much about these units do you, sort of drifted away into oblivion, bit like the panasonic 3do and the Atari Jaguar.
Thing is I do not know who their market is, it is very niche. Most PC gamers would likely stick to a PC and console gamers to Xbox and Playstation.
I am not against a more expensive console but I think they would limit their market a lot so probably a mistake. Upgradable consoles? I am against that, one of the things that makes them great is they are all the same and so games can be highly optimised with great results. If you want upgrades or high end hardware just go PC.
Here's one with 4 1080 GFX's cards and only £11k
That could well tempt Timey
Thats way to cheap ,i pondered on the idea of getting a top notch gaming PC but thought deep and hard about it and thought not for me,been there don't that,to lazy, getting older and didn't think it was a worthwhile investment.
I much prefer to buy a new console every 12 months instead

I am glad you have come to agree with me, we are now both thinking alike that consoles need to become modular devices, that way the entire console doesnt need to be purchased again for an upgrade and it becomes much more consumer friendly.
The main reason I think this wont happen is ultimately modular devices are more expensive to design and manufacture, the ps4 and and xbox1 both have the apu soldered onto the mainboard which is cheaper than manufacturing it as a removable component or adding an expansion port on the board with the necessary bandwidth feeding that port to work. So a modular ps4 would cost more than a normal ps4 but the upgrades would then be cheaper than newer console's.

Or better still some clever clogs should figure out a way for us to play the ps4 and xbox exclusive titles on our pc's!
Well i wouldn't exactly call it agreeing with you as you know i will buy new tech the minute its released which goes against everything you are saying,i just think instead of releasing consoles with slightly better specifications and trying to hit a certain price point so it doesn't reflect on poor sales is not the way to go.
If you have a New console on the market that in terms of specification is absolutely mind blowing for a console then people will pay the price,my point is consoles generally in this day sell between £300 and £400 and i think if they stick another £200 on those release prices they could give us so much more and there wouldn't be any reason to upgrade 2/3 years down the line like we are doing at present.
Im all for improved performance and outstanding looking games and but i think when they are designing and thinking about these consoles they are looking at the end retail price for the consumer which then reflects on what they put in it,which in the long run returns us to where we are now with consoles just not having the grunt and PC gamers having the better deal in terms of performance and resolution, obviously whatever console you build is not going to ever beat a really nice Gaming PC,but if you build something on Par in the first place then there is not such a huge margin.
People laughed when they released the Xbox One and Playstation 4,saying the tech in those consoles were already in 2 year old PCs.
Nope that would hurt console sales and thats not what they want
funny enough playstation now is launched on pc, but its still the ripoff price in the uk.
that's what they doing from now on, new incremental upgrades instead of entire new generations, but these are likely all to be fully priced devices each time.
Both of the companies realised killing the old game library on a new gen is bad news, so they doing these incremental upgrades now where old games carry on working.
So if its incremental then it should be done via modular upgrades.
That way I dont have to buy a new chassis, bluray drive, controller, psu, motherboard etc., every time.

And thats one thing that i would not give them the time of day for, originally it was a joke trying to make us pay up to £9.99 for some old playstation 2 or 3 game for a 3/5 day rental period, they finally scrapped that quite disgraceful idea and went for another subscription service for this Playstation Now or whatever they call it and its now i think last time i glanced at it £9.99 per month for the service.
What i am still trying to get my head around is why do they release more powerful consoles and give us constant HD remasters and services full of games from the past, wouldn't it be better giving us better games and supporting Independant developers .
oh yeah I remember, sony switched to the more friendly subscription charges but then square enix threw a fit it could no longer charge £5 for 24 hours so pulled its games
