Only one day left before TERA heads into the open beta phase! Time for us to talk about everything you need to know about this test stage.

All servers for our open beta will open on Thursday, 19th of April at 3 pm CEST / GMT +2 and they will stay open until midnight CEST / GMT +2 on Tuesday, 24th of April 2012.

How can I join the open beta?

Everyone who redeemed a key will be able to access the servers during open beta, this including CBT 1-5, single CBT keys, pre-order or full version keys and also sneak peek key users. In case you�re totally new to TERA and have no account or key redeemed so far, there is no need to worry, just follow the below listed steps:

1. Create an account for TERA or login into your existed account right here.

2. Click on the button �Enter Code� in the upper right corner.

3. Enter the following code: TERABETA

4. Click on Submit.

5. TERA has now been added to your game list, you can now click on the button �Download Game�.

6. This will download the launcher, in the launcher itself you need to login with your account details and after that the actual client download will happen.

7. Please be aware that you temporary need around 50 GB of free disk space. After the download and installation is complete the client will have a size of roughly 24 GB.

Download is about 25gb for me after finished applying patches.

I'm going to be playing on the Essenia server as that is PVP.

Is this the one where the developer is embroiled in civil and criminal wranglings with NCSOFT over IP theft etc.

Not that i'm saying that detracts from the game, which although looking nice, essentially just looks like Aion 4.0

Now, if the developers of Archeage were to engage their will, and seek a western publisher, and release Archeage in the west, that would most certainly be worth a look.

Guildwars 2 has much more going for it than TERA imo. Save your money and wait for that.

Not bothered about where they got it from. The engine is Unreal so it looks nothing like Aion for me.

I played GW2, it's different compared to Tera. Both use action based combat although I feel Tera is smoother, with bigger areas to explore. I don't think GW2 is as good as the hype.

Don't think I'll hit 20 though even though I got to 14 in one day as I work weekends. Really wanted to see the dungeon stuff.

Most seem to be saying its like Aion because of the anime-esque style to some characters, and the oversized weapons.

The biggest things GW2 has going for it in comparison, is the non subscription model, and three faction PVP, including WvWvW.

I'll say though, that GW2 will blatantly outsell TERA and therefore have a far larger playerbase than TERA will ever command.

The combat system in TERA will be a 5 minute wonder to most people - remember AoC? The novelty soon wears off. I wasn't aware that GW2 was like that because I thought they tried to keep it similar [in some ways] to GW1, with the exception of rock/paper/scissors builds and grind x quests. I know that TERA has the former, not completely sure about the latter, but in that respect GW2 is pushing the boundaries more than TERA.

Most people seem to be saying that GW2 is more like DAoC than TERA, which is what most people want.

It also cannot be ignored that en masse/bluehole are having to waste vast amounts of money on litigation, money that could be better spent on game improvements/content etc. It's true NCSOFT is also wasting money on litigation, but 1) they're a larger corporation and can absorb the losses better, and 2) they're winning the contest in the courts which means they will recoup most of their litigation investment.

I wouldn't be suprised if TERA moves to F2P at some point because of that, and low numbers after the honeymoon period.

I think the most noteworthy MMO's on the horizon are Archeage, Elder Scrolls, and GW2.

I just thought it would be a good idea to give people a taste of an MMO that is a bit different and has an open beta (looking at you GW2, pre purchase beta access nonsense) as no one else has said anything recently about it in the forum (don't want T2D thinking PC has stepped down from its master race podium).

My friend who was a big DAoC player actually likes TERA more than GW2. I don't care either way, apart from playing lancer on my 360 controller I'm looking for a more laid back game. All this aiming around is getting too much for me.

I'm very suspicous of MMOs these days, having tried so many failures in the past - AoC, WAR, LOTRO, RIFT, STO, SWTOR - all those boxes bought (not collectors editions i might add, i'm not that stupid . Infact scratch SWTOR, I learnt my lesson by then, the betas were bad enough. But all those boxes which included 30 days gametime, not one i went on to subscribe.

I would probably download the TERA open beta and give it a bash knowing under no circumstances i would never subscribe to it, if O2 wasn't so bad at the moment.

Did you know that Frogster, the EU (or UK) publisher of TERA, and all round terrible company, are making waves with their playerbase already by the announcements that they are censoring TERA so it can get a PEGI 12 rating. Shows you the market they want for TERA in the EU doesn't it - another ominous sign. They're removing blood etc from the game, other things are to come apparently.

I don't see anything wrong with buying a mmo, there's hardly a way to verify you'll like the end game meta content. Have you tried any of the f2p mmo's?

I'm on O2, wasn't a problem downloading for me, must be on one of the less used backhaul routes.
Probably switching to Sky at some point though.

Played it over the weekend and its not a very good game i feel the control set up is very clumbersome graphics are so-so and over all gameplay is bland.

Don't think this will pull me away from aion.

I would hardly call LOTRO a failed MMO. It is currently enjoying a resurge in interest after the novelty of SWTOR has worn off for the people that left to play it and there is a 5th anniversary event going on at the moment. The F2P model they have used is pretty good although any F2P game is going to get criticism for commercialism.

Havening spent most of the night playing the GW2 open beta I can safely say that I am going to enjoy it as much as I did GW1 (I only started playing LOTRO whilst waiting for GW2 so I might be a bit biased) as long as they sort the connectivity and capacity issues out.
