What should I do about poor broadband connection?

[link to this post]

Hi there, just wondered if i could get a good bit of advice...

I have recently just moved house and my broadband service has now been tranferred to the new house's line. (I am with Tiscali 2mb). (on a BT line)

The problem I am having is, although I have got my tiscali broadband at the new house, the connection is quite poor (very rarely getting above 400k/s) and also the connection is extremely 'fragile'...losing connection all of a sudden, being very unresponsive etc...its VERY frustrating.

The BT connection speed test shows that my new area supports up to 1mb broadband - not what I had before but I could quite happily manage on 1mb.

If the connection was a little faster (maybe 700-800k/s) I could make my peace with it...but what can I do about the cutting-off and un-responsive connection? surely this is something I could complain about??

Have you any suggestions or advice on who I could contact? I understand that I may not get anywhere on speeding up the connection, but surely I am entitled to a connection that doesnt randomly cut off (which cancels downloads and makes online-gaming impossible)

thanks in advance

Are you contractually tied to Tiscali? If not, I think most people would tell you the first thing to do is move ISP.

What are your modem/router stats?

I'm tied to a 12 month contract with Tiscali, of which I have about 7 months left. (Is it the Tiscali who i need to complain to though?? as surely its a 'problem' with the exchange or line...which is BTs responsibility no???)

My router is not the problem I dont think, its a pretty new 3com office connect wireless 802.11g (or whatever it is) ...which was working a treat at my old house.

The annoying thing is that my new house is part of a very large estate of newly developed houses (less than 5 years old)..you'd have thought that when they build them they'd have stuck a new exchange in too.

you always talk to your IOSP about broadband issues.

Useful advice requires your downstream attenuation and SNR/noise margin along with the connection speed. You may have a 2M service on a line that can't hack it.

But thats not going to help his poor line.
Op, forget about what you had at your old place as it means nothing now..... Its the line from exchange to house that counts. Have you moved closer to a exchange or further away ?
As others have said what are you SNR stats.
The other thing is to try using the master BT socket which should be located behind the lower faceplate on the main socket. If your connection is better there, then you need to look at the internal extentions.

Well the BT test sayd that the line only supports a mx of 1mb, so I've accepted im not going to get the 2mb i used to have...but the connection is more like 512k...nevermind 1mb....its the cutting-off that im most disappointed about....ill make a few phone calls i guess

thanks for your posts guys

It is Tiscali's responsibility to resolve faults with the service you rent from them, if it is deemed to be a fault with your line, then they will arrange it to be fixed.

If your line is provided via a 2meg link, it may be that the line cannot take it, and this could be the cause of the fault itself.

I accept that, but it might have eased his problems in getting something done about it. Sadly, the OP is tied-in for 12 months.

Good point, Albert. I was connecting to a 512 Tiscali service recently, even though the modem was synching at 2Mb, it does seem like something Tiscali tend to do.
