New BT Business Broadband with low Noise Margin.

[link to this post]

Hi

I have just purchased BT Business Broadband (up to 8Mb), which went live one day ago. I migrated from Tiscali 1Mb (phew) which was dire however I experienced very few disconnects.

I am using a Cisco 877 running the latest IOS (which worked fine previously with Tiscali 1Mb) and a quality line filter from a popular ADSL hardware site. The Noise Margin reported by the router fluctuates between 9db maximum and minus figures. Yesterday evening this was more like 5db and minus figures. I experienced disconnections constantly all night. The router would only synch for a few seconds before dropping out however as the night got later, it remained synch'd for longer periods but still dropped out.

My Attenuation is approximately 58db and never appears to go over 59db.

I understand that I am within the "testing period" of 10 days in which time basically anything can happen. I am however concerned that the Noise Margin is very low and I would like to know what I could do to improve this either now or later. Is it worth reporting this to BT Broadband as a fault or should I wait? I have a copy of the line stats from approximately 10 months ago and the Noise Margin was at 19db.

Many thanks!

This behaviour is perfectly normal - you just have to be patient for about 10 days or so.

If it is dropping a lot (more than 10 times in an hour) the systems should raise the target margin to compensate and hopefully stabilise things, this is expected to take around 10 days to happen, but will go on happening if it proves unstable for longer.

With Max the ADSL modem syncs at the speed that produces a noise margin of 6dB by default. i.e. noise margin is sacrificed to give you extra line speed.

what was it syncing at during the night?

you may find it was trying to sync at something a lot higher than the 1mbit you know to be stable. it'll probably even out over the next day or two somewhere around your previous 1mbit sync. if it gets something a bit higher than all the better for you.
