Connection Drops

[link to this post]

Hi all,

When I check my router stats I find that the system uptime is (say) 10 hrs whilst the WAN uptime is usually about 10

My understanding is that as total load increases the rate will adjust and reconnect at a lower speed to maximise

Quote: "......If your router is connecting at different rates, throughout the day, it's most likely due to local noise issues (which, in some cases, can be fixed by DIY methods)."

Well that's cleared that up thanks. When I reboot the router first thing each morning it generally syncs at an SNR of around 8-9 which, whilst not particularly good, is reasonable. At night, and sometimes during the day, this drops to around 7dB and on a really bad day (thunderstorms etc) to 6 and below. The resyncs are probably due to sudden noise spikes rather than general degradation although 7dB is a bit marginal. Already today it has done one resync and SNR is a steady 9dB. I live just over 3K from the exchange so it should be better than it is.

I've run out of tweaks for the Draytek. If I try to force a higher SNR by setting maxdnrate to below 101 it enters an endless cycle of retraining so the only alternative (which may or may not work), is a different router such as the Speedtouch range. However I see on another thread that the latest firmware for these removes one of the best tweaking methods so it looks as though that avenue may be closed. A borrowed Zyxel syncs at a much higher speed but SNR seldom gets above 6dB. I doubt that long term this would prove any better than the Draytek, particularly since the Zyxel seems pretty un-tweakable.

Progress, aint it wonderful :-)

I expect that is straight line distance and your actual line could be substantially longer!

It is with me as my line is 2.86 km from the exchange (straight line distance) but the actual length is over 4 km.

You could always get a 'b' grade Speedtouch router from DSL Depot (between
