to reduce maximum speed either ask your ISP to have BT put a higher noise margin (this will be a challenge) or get a router where you can either tweak the SNR margin up or limit the speed directly. Better to fix the wiring though, as the errors persist even at lower speeds.

What would happen if i just changed the master socket and added that faceplate, but without connecting the router to that socket? Would that have any affect or would it only help to change that if i plugged the router into that socket?

then it would be half way there and get over most of the issues, providing the microfilter is a decent one.


The incoming line and the terminating socket is BT's, not yours to play with.

I would prefer to have it so the router stays upstairs with all the computers, but i really don't want the RJ11 extension running up the stairs as we already have wires for the other socket.

[censored] connection just went again and has now synced at 7360 kbps. What's annoying is i know that at a max i'll only be able to get 5MB, so why sync me higher? Okay i obviously have a wiring issue somewhere, but i'd rather have a sync at 5000 kbps which is all i'm going to get than have more wires all over the place.

If by socket with faceplate you mean an ADSL master socket faceplate, then the ADSL signal is only present at that faceplate, you could run a dedicated extension for the ADSL modem if you wanted - preferrably using CAT3 or CAT5 cable

'NTE-2005 Master face plate' is what i ordered but haven't fitted.

Sorry, not really to upto speed with all these terms. Basically if i got that fitted but didn't have the 'Professional RJ11 - RJ11 ADSL 2+ 20m' that i ordered (ADSLnation) plugged in would it make any odd if i just put the previous phone cord back in?

Or is that not bypassing the problem because i dont have the RJ11 going from the router to the new faceplate? (Which seems to be the solution) Just trying to get round not having another long wire all over the place to be honest.

The faceplate you have ordered removes the ADSL signal from any telephone extensions you wire up from the faceplate.

The only way to get ADSL to another location would be to run an extension from the ADSL socket on the faceplate (or ADSL connectors on the back of the faceplate - if ordering a modified faceplate)

Okay, i think i'm getting the jist if this.

Basically the set up we have in the house is...Master socket downstairs at front door which has a filter on and an extension cable running upstairs into a bedroom where there is another telephone box (Not sure how to describe it) above the bedroom door. From there we have a filter on it, which has the Sky box and another extension cable going into another bedroom where the router is.

It looks a right mess, hence why another wire/extension cable would send my non-tech savy head into a right spin.
