Weird Max happenings !!!

The above is what is supposed to happen on Max but as I contacted my ISP (when I first went on to Max) to increase my SNR to 9 dB, as the default 6 dB was too unstable, I'm surprised to find that my SNR is once again on 6 dB

I thought this couldn't happen when your SNR is fixed

I had a 26 day uptime but I didn't even switch off the router and it changed itself!

You can see the 26 day uptime from 4th December to 30th December (today) and the strange thing is that my BRAS profile has gone up from 3 Mb to 3.5 Mb (which it was originally on until the longer evenings of winter) without having to sync at the mandatory 3 day period!

I only noticed this when I logged on around half an hour ago and I also noticed that my upstream sync is 0 instead of the usual 448 but I just tried out a speed test and I got 3.318 Mb downstream and 371 Kb upstream which is normal and so the 0 upstream must just be a glitch!

The one thing that is good is that my SNR is at 6 dB (screenshot only taken around half an hour ago) where as what used to happen was in the evenings it used to be at only 3 or 4 dB and only just hanging on as shown below:

Also what used to happen was that in order to get a 4 Mb sync, I had to force the Coding Gain up to 6 but now it is at 4 Mb even though the Coding Gain is set to auto!

Max seems to be getting better - well for me anyway!


p.s. Has this also happened to anyone else on Max who has asked for their SNR margin to be fixed at a higher level to find that it automatically goes back to 6 dB again after a certain length of time?

What gives you the idea that the SNR margin is fixed? I don't think anyone has ever documented that requesting a higher target margin figure will not be subject to the believed 14 day rule.

If you are very stable at 9dB, then following what you quoted it may drop back to 6dB.

My mistake then.
Although I read that if a SNR margin is requested, it stays at that higher level so sometimes it's confusing what to believe.

If going back to the default 6 dB margin makes my line unstable again then when I go back to 9 dB, I will turn my router off more so that the 14 day uptime isn't reached.

There's no may about it, it did drop back to 6 dB !


p.s. I have 'opted in' with the interleaving so I assume that this also defaults to 'auto' after certain line conditions are met?

if you get that speedtouch dont worry about the snr target because you can put it on 9db yourself.

The upstream been 0 I now think is a BTw bug, my BRAS profile updates started looking like this.

See it says -000 now after the 6240000 that used to say 448000.

I think he had it set manually to 9db so possibly a manual overide making it fixed, but seems it wasnt fixed and still subject to automation.

I've have now ordered the 585 but I won't get it for a few days due to the New Year.

I'm not saying that I want it back on 9 dB again as now I can get a higher sync but I will ask to have it put back to 9 dB again if my line becomes as unstable as it did when I first went on Max back in May!

I was also surprised (at first) that I got that higher 4 Mb sync without the mandatory 3 day wait until I realised that because the SNR dropped, this allowed my router to sync (slightly) higher!

Yes that's right.

James (off DSL Zone UK) also thought that the SNR target was fixed and this was why I thought it was hence my post.

yeah that sometimes happens, the BRAS profiles are very inconsistent, sometimes they dont update at all and sometimes they update after 75mins which is what happened to you, and sometime they do what they supposed to do update after 3 days.

My profile went up 75mins after a synch yesterday it wasnt the 3 day wait.

The target SNR can be 'hard pinned', but how you would go about getting this done via your ISP, I have no idea.

I found that my line resync'd a few days back all on its own. I am tweaking my speedtouch from 15 down to 11db. This was about after 20 days after my SNR target had been raised to 15db. I took the tweak off the router and still sync'd at 11db so assumed the target had been reset. So yes it happened also to me, not after 14 days as has been suggested on here but nearly a month after.
