My connection has been changed at my exchange to enable up to 8Mb, my connection speed was a constant 2.2Mb before the changeover and now I'm only getting 2Mb.
I contacted a Talk Talk engineer, who told me that the computer at the exchange determines the speed of the connection. He also said once this is set by the computer the speed will never change, even though I'm getting and marginally slower speed than the old connection.
I'm approx. half a mile from the exchange.
He also told me that some people who originally had 2Mb connection before the change over, had been given a 512Kb connection after the change over.

Can anybody tell me if this is true or is the engineer trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

As for what the engineer says - it sounds very simplistic if true

TT are now believed to be setting all new LLU connections at 15dB target noise margin to reduce the volume of CS calls. This means a slower but more stable sync speed. If your stats show a stable 15dB margin, you can get TT 2nd line to reduce this to 12, 9 or 6dB with a corresponding increase in your sync speed.

BTW you won't be able to contact any TT engineers. They are only 1st line CS staff in Indian or South African call centres reading from a script or more likely lying through their teeth.

No one will be able to say for sure what you should do until you post your stats.
