Telephone Cable Advice

[link to this post]

I have noticed that when I plug my broadband into the master test socket the sync rate is 6mb, when I connect to the telephone extensions the sync speed goes down to 3.5mb.

So I was thinking of re-wiring my telephone sockets.

Is the best cable to use CAT 5?

Also I will have two telephone sockets coming off the master socket. Does it need the ringing capacitor in both sockets?

I have estimated I will need about 25 meters of cable. Is think likely to reduce my sync speed even if I use CAT5 ?

Finally has anyone got any recommendations of where to buy the cable?

one master socket with ringing capacitor is enough. Fitting a faceplate filter ( adslnation.com clarity.it ) and extending to the router with Cat 5 is one approach that usually gives the best results.

Disconnecting the ring wire off terminal 3 of all sockets may be a quick cheap fix.

There's a guide here http://www.readman.dsl.pipex.com/other/UKphonecatwiring.htm
Hope that helps

Thanks all.

My Master socket does not have an external BT socket on it. (i.e. the bottom half of it is completely blank) I can't remember if it had a ringing capacitor in it.

But after reading about the terminal 3 it doesn't matter because the micro filter has the capacitor in it, correct?

Also both my phone extensions do have a capacitor in them, it is best to replace them with non-capacitor ones or doesn't it really matter.

Thanks again for all the advice

Correct.

If you remove the wire from T3 they are irrelevant.

You can always cut the capacitor out if it makes you feel better.

I got some Cat5 cable from work, only to find it was the stranded type

So I disconnected t3 on the master socket, and the first extension, and made sure my other extension was connected externally to the micro-filter.

My sync rate has now improved to 5.5mb

I will rewire the little bit of cable from the master socket to the extension when I get some single core Cat5 cable.

All I need to do now is wait for BT to increase my download speed.

They're the only two needed, so suck-it-and-see.
