The South Yorkshire plan involves replacing copper lines that run from telephone exchanges to street cabinets with fibre. This will allow for much faster connection speeds and more advanced services.

As discussed elsewhere in this multi post, we are the WAN providers to Thales TS and I have mailed one of those responsible to see if he is prepared to leak a publishable update. Guess I won't get a response until the new year but will let you know what (if anything) is going on.

Their proposal was FTTC with sub-loop unbundling. I've seen the hardened Alcatel kit to be used street side and the only thought I had was "blimey, that is gonna be one big extra street cab if it takes off"...

Back end was cutting edge (bear in mind Thales bought a large portion of Alcatel-Lucent last year) with multiple 10gig rings and dark fibre in some locations with two full transit break outs in S. Yorks and media distri servers.. Guess you get the picture..
