Length of phone cable in house

My Master socket with phone and adsl ports on it is in the hallway, my pc is in the lounge, there must be about 35ft of cable to the rj11 socket near the pc then 3-4ft to the pc, my line attenuation is 49db. On Tuesday I go live with O2 and wireless adsl router, would my line syncs be better if I put the router in the hallway and got a wirelesss usb dongle for the pc, or is there a better cable I could use, or is the 49db not linked to the length of cable ? Just think how much attenuation that 10m of cable adds to the line - you have probably around 4000 - 5000 M from exchange to you. The chances are that it would not show up as any difference at all so don't worry about that.

You may find that there is a little extra noise - if the cable goes close to a fridge, radio, girlfriends toys &c. It will be trial and error.

What sync do you get at the master socket compared to at the extension socket, or can't you find out? I would have thought 35' of poor quality phone cable could increase the attenuation. Good quality should have negligible effect as already said by another.

However I would think it would be susceptible to noise. The recommended cabling would be to put the router near the master socket and run cat5 ethernet cable to the computer.

Wireless speed can be variable. Homeplug type solution with the router at the master socket is worth looking at, to get rid of the cable run.

as already mentioned, cable type over cable length is the real issue. The typical cable types you get with prefitted RJ45's at either end are usually substandard for anything more then a meter's cable run, flat cable with non-twisted pairs and not solid core copper.

As already mentioned a long Cat5e network cable would be better with the router situated at the socket and the cable linking your PC to the router. Atleast with Cat5 its made to a proper standard unlike most of the modem/telephone extension kits you buy in DIY stores.

The face plate has an RJ45 socket, the engineer when he fitted the plate put an RJ45 at on end and an RJ11 socket box at the other end, for the modem cable.
I have some big lengths of good networking cable, ( I used to work on the bins, office were getting re-fitted so lots of cables n stuff were thrown out, mine now )
The wifes toys.... battery, not electrical so no interference, Ahem....
