Frequent Problem Displaying Pages

[link to this post]

Hi,

I currently have broadband and a Netgear Modem Router (DG834G). It was worked well without problems for the first couple of months of connecting this way (used a USB modem before), but over the last 2-3 weeks we have been getting the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" page alot. Does anyone know what the potential problem might be? Or if there may be a possible way of solving it? Unfortunately I have no knowledge whatsoever of internet/broadband connection troubleshooting, so anything I could try would need to be explained in real layman's terms! But any help at all would be great.

Thanks very much,

Margaret

It sounds like it might be a DNS issue (DNS converts site names like bbc.co.uk into the number, or IP address, needed to contact it).

Do you leave your router switched on all the time? If so it might be worth switching it off/on to see if that cures the problem.

If not try changing your DNS servers by looking here:

https://www.opendns.com/start?computer

Please make a note of your current settings before you make any changes.

edited to add:

I'm only suggesting you enable openDNS, not any other steps mentioned on that site.

Might be worth posting your line statistics from your router....there may be a clue there.

are you comfortable accessing the web pages of your router on 192.168.0.1 etc ? If so I would go to the Network settings page (low down on the left, under Advanced) and put 1500 in the WAN MTU box if it is a smaller number now.

Thanks very much for your replies!

My router is left on pretty much all the time - although I have tried switching it off for a while on a couple of occasions to see if it made any difference, which it didn't.

The DNS server setting was set as "get automatically from ISP" - so I have tried entering the addresses given to me in the link you provided john2007.

Yarwell - I have entered 1500 where you said - it was 1458.

Zarjaz....not sure where I would find the line statistics..?

Thanks for your help so far! Seems to be just the same at the moment.

have you restarted it since making the changes ?

if it won't go to www.bbc.co.uk then try http://212.58.253.71 instead. If it is a DNS problem the latter will work when the former doesn't. Is it all web pages or just some ? can you collect email or use other things at the time when the web pages won't load ?

Note which lights are on on the router, also when you go to 192.168.0.1 do you see an IP address under "ADSL Port" on the first page and do you see a speed under "modem" at the bottom.

If you press "connection status" at the bottom a little pop-up window will say how long you have been connected - this will only be a short time if it is losing the connection frequently or if you just rebooted.

All looks reasonable, a fixed speed 1Mbps service.

Up Time 00:35:05 so it held the connection up over half an hour.
