Suppliers that force the use of their modem

[link to this post]

Hello

I was going to switch to Sky broadband, but I found out that I can't use my own netgear modem with them and have to use their supplied modem as they force the use of it with some non-standard connection settings.

So now I'm looking elsewhere, does anyone know which other providers carry out the same trick as Sky do so I can avoid them?

ta Chris

If you read this post, you can get your Sky Username and Password and then use your own router.

As far as I understand it that doesn't work with the new Sky routers; I don't know if there is a way to get the username and password out of the new ones. Best to ask in the Sky forum here.

Steve

I think they're the only one that "force" you to use their kit. Several will only support their own kit, in which case you might have to use it while getting help from them, but most don't care - it is a wires only serive after all.

The easiest way to avoid any such tie-in is to go with a supplier that doesn't offer free hardware.

So if i've got this right they supply a box with the username and password already set and have modified the firmware to hide the username and password from you so you can't set up an alternative modem/router?

Believe Be might do the same.

But think of it from the isp's point of view, makes it a lot easier for them to provide support to users when all are using the same kit.

Errr can you not just ring sky, BS and tell them you updated the netgear firmware with official netgear firmware from the netgear site and then explain you need your username and password???

Then once you have it i see no reason why you couldnt use any other router.

I don't think Be* do that, as other people have used their own ADSL2+ routers and reported that you don't even need to enter a username and password! (Unless I've misunderstood )
