Can I use dial up and adsl at the same time?

[link to this post]

Just by plugging a 56k modem into

Can I configure it so that IE uses the dial up and firefox the broadband?

Can I also configure it so that any P2P connections use the broadband?

Thanks

Both IE and firefox will attempt to use the "best" connection automatically. You can make ie dial the connection but it will use the fastest ip path available (and that should be the broadband).

If you keep the dialup and broadband separate on different computers they will both work fine on the one line.

in my experience if you dial up on a broadband connected PC the traffic goes out the dialup line.

I ran up a large bill by doing this remotely on a PC and then I couldn't disconnect remotely !

That's down to windows being poor at selecting the best route. However, what you can't do easily is choose which applications use which connection.

I've done that using my new comp for BB and my old one for dial up.

Does Vista accept the drivers for an old dial up modem, I know that XP does ?

My Vista-based laptop certainly has Vista drivers for its built-in analogue modem, if that's what you mean.

Well my friend has bought an Acer Vista desktop and I was going to give them an external 56k modem to use as they only have dialup on their old comp at the moment so want to use dialup on their new one until they get BB.

An external modem will be supported without any special drivers.
As long as the desktop has a working serial port, that is.

Any special reason you want to support dialup AND broadband ?
- as a backup, its not a problem
- for dialup to a Company (disconnect the broadband or ask for their VPN access point/method)

ANO reason ?

else just connect only the one you want to use at any one time.
