Slow speed after migration to another provider

[link to this post]

Hi everyone, this is my first post on thinkbroadband. Its probably going to sound like a really stupid question, especially for this time on New Years Eve.

I have just changed suppliers from AOL to BT. With AOL after the initial training period (I think you call it that) my connection stayed at between 5.75 and 6.5 Meg 100% of the time. I switched to BT (using a MAC code) and was connected today. My connection speed is now a stable 2.0 to 2.5 Meg. I have BT Total Broadband Option 3 and I am using the supplied BTHub. Is the drop in speed due to the fact that having changed suppliers I have to go through the 10 day training period again or should I be calling BT.

Thanks in advance for you help,

N1CECUPOFTEA

Did you also go for "BT Vision"?
If so, they may be starting you off on a lower speed - It should gradually recover.

I haven't got BT Vision yet but I may get it in the future. Why would having BT Vision affect my initial connection speed, sorry if I am being dumb.

CARPETBURN, thanks for your constructive reply. The whole point of my post was to ask if having been on ADSL Max for over a year with one supplier I would still need to go through another training period.

It has an assured rate (or words to that effect), which is required by the vision box.
Fine on short, high speed lines, but quite how much of an effect the speed [the box takes away from the regular internet traffic] on low speed lines has, remains to be seen.

Your low speed could be nothing more than the router resyncing during a high noise period, then just sitting there.
It might be an idea to reboot the box tomorrow morning (after daybreak).

adebov, thanks again. I will try rebooting the box tomorrow. When you change broadband providers with a MAC code would the ten day training period normally restart?

Yes, sometimes it does.
Although, as the "training period" doesn't actually do anything (other than monitor your connection speed, to establish the "maximum stable rate" and the "fault threshold"), most people don't notice.
The things that cause changes in line speed (line faults, changes in the target noise margin, etc.) are on-going, and not at all related to the training period.
Has your noise margin changed? Normally the target is 6dB; but if it's changed, that could affect your connection speed (roughly 250-400kbps for every 1dB increase in the target margin).

Which is the important one?

The following: -
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 7,616
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 17.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 10.0
Line Profile: Interleaved

Shows you have a really short telephone line (probably less than 1km), and are connecting at full speed.
Your connection is interleaved (God knows why BT have done this, your line is so short, there's no way it needs to be interleaved to help with error connection), as such you'll not get the full 8128kbps (but you're pretty close to it).

Do a speed test from the BT site, and post the results.

First impressions are;
There's nothing wrong with your connection (apart from it being interleaved, which will rob you of around 0.65Mbps), so you should be on a 6.5Mbps IP profile (instead of the 7.15Mbps IP profile you would be on if BT had configured your profile correctly).
Any speed lower than that, will be due to your new ISP (a shame it's BT, as you're probably stuck with a 12 or 18 month minimum contract ).
