over my monthly 30g allowance - again!!!!

[link to this post]

Hi

Is there a way I can test the amount of stuff I download monthly as Pipex are telling me I keep going over my monthly 30g allowance and I find this hard to believe!!!!

Is there some software which will help me keep track of my usage?

Many thanks for any help

Have a look at NetMeter, it's a popular and flexible little program that solves the problem for many people.

It's also free !

Netmeter is excellent.. Also, if you can, find out what "Pipex" class as a monthly period - it might not be from 1st of the month to the last day of the month, it could actually be the date that you are billed on, so if you pay the bill on the 16th then your month is the 16th of one month till 15th of the next. Either the billing team or FUP team would be able to advise you here

Does your router give any download/upload stats? If you don't know how to get them look here or here.

Three replies so far about Netmeter. Not something I know anything about, just that many such tools only look at the traffic on a single PC, so if you have a network it gets more complicated, as you need to know how much on each and separate the internet access from the LAN traffic - all the machines on a network keep in touch even if ypu aren't using the network.

Have you got an unsecured wireless router? Neighbours can accidentally use it if you have and often not realise. They just start complaining that they can't get into their email! Less likely but possible is someone deliberately using it, even hacking in if you only have WEP security.

Edit:- Do you use P2P including BBC iPlayer? Unless you handle things right there can be a huge amount of upload from those that you don't realise is happening unless looking for it.

Bob: BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet Lite.
Purple Cloud for domain reg/hosting, email hosting and now also web space.

Tell Pipex that if they expect you to stick within some limit of theirs then they need to provide you with a way of monitoring your usage as measured by them on their website. If they don't do that then they'll have to put up with you exceeeding it.

Programs like netmeter may not match their measurement -and certainly won't if you use multiple PCs.
