Is it possible to use coaxial with adsl?

I am not sure if my title is really that clear, so let me explain the situation and maybe it will become clear and someone can offer some advice.

Currently, I rent houses that include (in all of them) *free* internet acces, via Virgin Cable.
The problem with this is that due to the capping that is enforced by virgin means that the line becomes very slow very quickly - especially if 3 people use the line moderately.

Now, when I initially renovated the properties, I ran coaxial under floor boards so that the modem would sit in a cupboard and would not disturb anyone. Thus, when Virgin came and installed the connection box, i told them where to install it and the coaxial was just screwed on.

So, my problem is this: If i want adsl, I have a phone line installed is there any way I can utilize the coaxial I have already installed??

The only purpose I can think of for your co-axial cable is to get hold of some very old 10-base-T network cards. Running phone lines through it would serve no useful purpose.

Why do you think ADSL would be any better? Three users on a connection browsing wouldn't make most connections break out in even a mild sweat so my betting is that at least one of your tenants is using P2P and hammering torrents can kill any connection stone dead for other usage.

If you really wish to continue to provide this service take a look at the QOS settings in the router you are using - if it doesn't have any then get one that does and make sure that one port can't hog all the bandwidth.

This use will almost certainly be in breach of VM terms of service.
As it is you paying the connection I guess then it is you that the copyright protection vultures will be chasing if that usage attracts their attention (the odds are highly against that though).

I had a similar problem, and at the moment my co-axial cable run is just used as a riser backbone for the Ethernet - My ADSL comes in downstairs to an ADSL router, which is connected via an old Netgear EN104 Ethernet hub (Which has RJ45 and Coax connectors), which is connected to my coax cable. The coax goes past a 3Com OfficeConnect 8/TPM, which is connected to various games consoles in the lounge and my unsecured WiFi AP, then goes upstairs to my server, which bridges the connection from a 3Com 3C905B on to a gigabit CAT6 network and my secured WiFi AP

At the moment, I'm trying to find this thing that the USA has, which allows you to run gigabit over coaxial cables using some sort of broadband signal (Broadband as opposed Baseband as used by Ethernet, not broadband as in ADSL/Cable).

There's one made by a company called Sigma Designs called CoAir, and one by a company called PulseLINK, but the units are hard to get hold of as they seem to only be sold to Cable wholesalers!

Hmmm...... a self-contradicting argument, nice !

Why ? Broadband is a terrible system ! It's only used because it's the most cost-effective way of delivering digitally-encoded radio signals over a cable that wasn't ever designed to do it. Baseband has much better noise immunity, whether it's via expensive co-ax or cheap twisted pair.

Manufacturers are experimenting with coax for 10Gbps over copper - although there are a whole load of different implementations of this whilst the standards are not in place.
