Any point to internet TV?

i was wondering, what is the point of iplayer etc? and why so many people use it

do people like watching tv on there computer?

i do not see the point at all, due to some factors :P

1 = nice to chill on sofa and watch it on a big screen
2 = limited of watching the program. can use a hd recorder and watch it when i want
3 = quality not that good

Are there lots of people with HTPCs?
People saying that internet download of movies it going to be the big thing, again it limits us a lot for pc/xbox/ps3

e.g. get a dvd , go round mates and watch it
drm = if get it from xbox360, can only watch it on that, can not watch it on another xbox.

this just makes me stuck to my room

I really do hate these limits

Some of us don't have TV and others watch it at work. Two good reasons for its existence. I do agree that the quality is pretty low.

Employers might dispute that the second reason is a good one...

if you want to catch something you missed it does something that an HD recorder can't ie you don't have to plan to record in advance.

On a bog standard 21" telly viewed from across the room the iPlayer downloads aren't a mile off the quality of the aerial signal and can be better (due to lack of interference).

This logic has no fault.

Couldnt tell you i personally stream video content from one computer to another in a seperate room with a 400cm projector screen. Or if i cant be bothered or i know the quality isnt all that i plug a HDMI to DVI cable into my pc and connect that to the TV.

1 = Yes it is so why dont you, was your TV made with the Ark? Or is plugging a cable in too difficult???
2 = HD RECORDER.... Oh so you pay sky or virgin money ?
3 = Quality is fine on anything upto around a 30 inch screen, push it further and it starts to look more blocky. There are of course other services where you can download video content in true HD, i gather though without being rude you havent found that yet.

Errr why would you need a HTPC, 99% of modern TVs have HDMI or VGA sockets and 99% of PCs can output to them.

Errr what??? Games consoles such as the 360 already have their own film download services and support.

Limits????....... Yea i guess being able to watch a whole heap of TV and film as and when you want without moving off your bottom really is limiting.

I would say it's adequate as a last resort but I'd far rather watch a proper recording at the moment. I find that owning a PVR means I watch what I want when I want and in far better quality. iPlayer and the like or just for the odd occasion when something goes wrong.

Still..a couple more years and the quality will be sorted.

What makes you think that? With such a flexible A/V set up as you already have I would have thought you would have known a bit more about it than that.

but saying that can get freesat HD recorder soon, and do not need to pay monthly fee

Just saying, it is limiting. I want to get to my mates to watch a movie, got a movie we can watch, but will have to bring my pc/game console to watch it, load of hassle imo, instead of getting a simple disc, nice and easy, you see where i am coming from?

Plenty of point for me.

(a) I haven't got satellite/Freeview, so can watch programmes I wouldn't otherwise have.

(b) The laptop is portable, the TV isn't, so I'm not limited to sitting in the living room, in front of the TV. I can watch where I want - notably, in bed.
