Line gone mad today.

Having had a sync of 8128 since July 2007 my line went mad today, loads of resyncs but keeping the same speed. My SNR is 4.5db and has been for a very long time now, certainly since July last year, but for some reason I got massive bursts of CRC errors around 12pm then the router seemed to reboot. I was not around so don't know if it was the router playing up or lightening. Weather has been pretty bad today from all accounts. But when I got to the router, ST546v6, I discovered that it had rebooted as it said in the log number of resets:1 which always means the router has rebooted. I also discovered my ST510v4 being used as a switch had rebooted at roughly the same uptime as the router.

Power supply disturbance or lightening noise on the ring main. Both computers stayed up so power didn't go down completely. It's a strange one.

Well it's stabilised for 24 hours now. Still puzzled why after a year's stability it went crazy, I suspect a power problem - enough to reboot the routers but not enough to reboot the computers.

Work in the exchange?

On a Saturday. Mind you I saw a couple of Openreach vans the other day and they seemed to be fitting a plate in the footpath at a neighbours house. So who knows, can't quite see the exchange from here.

Openreach and other parts of BT operate 7 days a week and Openreach have Saturday appointments for end user visits in most areas
I can recall when we last had a line fault about 6 or 7 years ago, a BT engineer attended on a Sunday, though we were out he called the mobile we had given.

Ok possible explanation. Around about the time the resyncs occurred the lights were flickering and NEDL (local power company) have the street up around the corner. So it looks like the flickers were enough to cause the routers to reboot/lights flicker but not computers. Thought my router was on its way out at first.

Sudden things like that tend to do more damage to me than to my system!

Just speculating but I suspect there might be quite a bit of out of hours work going on in the exchanges at the moment with the forthcoming changeovers to ADSL2+ especially to avoid weekday business lines.
